Sun 29th April 2007 – Lincolnshire County U12 Cup Final – Deeping 1 v 0 Discoveries (at Boston)

Deeping Rangers U12s secured the Lincolnshire County Cup with a hard fought victory in an enthralling encounter against Grimsby based Discoveries at Boston on Sunday. For the majority of the squad this was their first taste of playing on a league ground and the boys conquered any nerves to put in a tremendous battling performance to secure the silverware that their efforts this season deserved. Rangers started slowly, and survived a couple of early attacks from Discoveries who were moving the ball quickly. But, Deeping started to settle and were able to impose themselves on the game, looking to give Sparrow & Howard the chance to run at the opposition defence, and Deeping created a couple of openings with one attack being pushed away for a corner. This first opportunity to get the ball into the heart of the area enabled Deeping to get the lead that they wanted after 10 minutes, and what a cracker it was! The corner was played short and Lewis’s cross into the area was met by a superb volley from Jamie Reeve from 12 yds which absolutely rocketed into the net. The large Deeping following went wild in celebration of a goal that would grace a cup final at any level of football! Rangers had a spring in their step now and started to create chances with a run & shot from Lewis and Matt Sparrow taking the ball down well to shoot, this effort being tipped away for a corner. Mid way through the half Discoveries found their attacking flair and moving the ball wide were looking dangerous. Luke Gasson in the Deeping goal dealt well with a couple of shots and Rangers defended well as their opponents forced a number of corners. Deeping continued to attack on the break and Reeve played a good ball into the area but no one could connect. Heading into half-time Gasson made a good save from a long range shot and Rangers looked a bit shaky defending a corner but eventually worked the ball away well. Rangers started the 2nd half brightly, surviving an early shot, and then forcing a number of corners. They almost created a half-chance for Sparrow as the ball bobbled in the area and then Sparrow fed Reeve but the ball was forced out for another corner. Discoveries started to enjoy plenty of possession in the 2nd half but Deeping continually got players behind the ball and made themselves difficult to break down. Mid-way through the half, as they searched for an equaliser Discoveries put pressure on the Deeping goal, but man of the match Gasson was equal to anything thrown at him as first he saved a shot from the edge of the area then dealt comfortably with a good cross from the right. Rangers were playing more on the break now, but knew that they could frustrate their opponents by keeping them outside the area and they prevented them creating any clear-cut chances. As the tension grew towards the final whistle, Rangers pushed for a second goal that would secure the cup but they could not create the chance, whilst at the other end they continued to defend solidly as Burdock & Errico dealt with anything played through the middle. As the crowd called for the final whistle, the referee duly obliged and the victory celebrations could begin – a tremendous end to the season for Deeping Rangers, crowned U12 County Cup Winners!! After the match a delighted Rangers manager, Nigel Reeve, said “I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day and winning just capped it all off. The support was fantastic throughout and I don’t mind admitting that the reception we received when we first came out of the tunnel brought a lump to my throat.” Reflecting on the performance of the team he added, “I thought that each and every one of the lads gave me absolutely everything they had during the match. I was an immensely proud manager, especially of Jamie for scoring that fantastic goal.”

Wed 25th April 2007 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – U12 Division 1 – Glinton Red 1 v 6 Deeping Rangers

Deeping Rangers U12s completed their league campaign with a convincing victory at Glinton on Weds evening and in doing so secured runners-up spot in Division One. Deeping knew that a victory was a must and a 4 goal blitz in just 8 minutes mid way through the first half guaranteed that they got the result they wanted. Deeping stared brightly, taking the game to Glinton and were unlucky with early efforts from Howard and Levin. Rangers continued to put the home side under pressure and were showing enthusiasm to get the goal that would settle their nerves. Rangers opened the scoring on 11 minutes as a corner from the right found its way to Matt Sparrow at the back post and he made no mistake with a shot from close range. Deeping extended their lead 2 minutes later with the best goal of the night. Harrison Sadler picked the ball up on the left hand side and beat 2 defenders on his run into the area, beating the home keeper with a firm shot. Deeping put the game beyond Glinton with 2 more goals in 2 minutes, both from corners on the left. The first reached Jamie Reeve at the back post and he finished well and then following another corner Sadler’s cross from the left was met by a great header from Hayden Errico. Somewhat understandably, Rangers took their foot off the pedal at this stage and they survived some Glinton pressure before half-time, but they defended resolutely with Burdock clearing one goal-bound header off the line. Ranger’s manager Nigel Reeve attempted to get his team to up the tempo after half-time, but they again started sluggishly and some poor defending allowed a Glinton striker to meet a cross from the left with a good finish to pull a goal back. This woke Rangers up a little and they started to take the game to their hosts again. In a competitive 2nd half both sides had chances but were unable to capitalise. But with 10 minutes left Deeping got back on the scoresheet, as Marcus Howard took his tally for the season to 20 with a great turn & shot from the edge of the area. The scoring was completed with just over 5 mins to go as Matt Sparrow weaved his way into the box on the right and his cross was finished with a good effort from Harry Measures. This was another controlled performance from Deeping and their 2nd place finish is a reward for a season of hard work. They now head off to Boston on Sunday for the Lincs County Cup Final – lets hope that they can secure some silverware to round off their season. After the match, Nigel Reeve was obviously delighted and said, “Finishing in 2nd place is reward for a good season but I’m hoping the lads can remain focused and make it a great season by winning on Sunday”.

Sun 1st April 2007 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – U12 League Cup Final – Wisbech St Mary 2 v 1 Deeping Rangers

Deeping Rangers U12s produced a battling display in the League Cup Final on Sunday but it was not enough to overcome a stong Wisbech St Mary side who ran out winners by 2–1. Rangers Manager Nigel Reeve had to shuffle his starting line-up after learning before kick-off that Hayden Errico would not be well enough to play, but Deeping started well in this show-piece occasion. In fact Rangers had the best of the early play and, with the wind at their backs, were looking to move the ball forward quickly. Deeping got their noses in front after just 10 minutes with a superb free kick from Ben Lewis. Following a foul in the middle of the Wisbech half Lewis sent the free kick screaming into the net from fully 30 yards. Rangers continued to apply pressure but were pegged back following a free-kick awarded against them. Rangers failed to deal with a ball to the right hand side of their area and as keeper Luke Gasson raced from his line the Wisbech striker slotted the ball past him to make it 1-1. Rangers found themselves on the back foot for most of the rest of the half, and were pleased to head into the break level following a couple of missed chances from Wisbech and a good save from Gasson. Deeping started the 2nd half, playing into the strong wind, looking to get back in front and were unlucky as Sadler saw his shot go narrowly wide. But Wisbech were looking dangerous and won a series of corners which put Deeping under pressure. And, Wisbech were in front 10 mins into the 2nd half as yet another corner was met with a good header at the back post and despite the best efforts of the Rangers defenders the ball found its way over the line. It turned out to be the winning goal, as Rangers struggled to really get their normally fluent game going and despite some pressure late in the half chances were at a premium for Deeping. They continued to defend valiantly and thanks to some good goalkeeping from Gasson and some last ditch tackling they prevented Wisbech extending their lead further despite having a number of good chances. After the match, Nigel Reeve was disappointed, but said of his team, “I was proud of the way they conducted themselves today and hope todays result will spur them on to make sure we secure runners up spot in the league, ahead of Wisbech, and that we go to the Lincs Cup Final at the end of April full of confidence.”

Sun 18th March 2007 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – U12 Division 1 – Stanground Juniors 1 v 1 Deeping Rangers

Deeping U12s made their second visit in a month to table toppers Stanground and once again produced an excellent performance against the Champions elect, securing a 1-1 draw and extending their unbeaten run to 14 matches in all competitions. The match was played in difficult condtions with a very strong wind and it proved difficult for either side to really settle and to play the controlled football that they are capable of. Rangers started with the wind at their backs and immediately found how easy it was to over-hit balls in to the home area. Realising that Stanground were struggling to create a threat into the wind, Ranger’s Manager Nigel Reeve made a tactical switch after 10 mins, from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2, and it paid dividends immediately. Following a good move down the right, the ball broke to leading scorer Marcus Howard in the area and he turned quickly and rifled a shot into the roof of the net, taking his tally to 18 goals for the season. Rangers continued to press and were looking to make the most of the wind with shots from outside the area and Errico was unlucky to see his effort go narrowly wide on the quarter hour mark. Stanground were limited to rare attacks in the first half, but found visiting keeper Luke Gasson in good form as he controlled his area well. Deeping were restricted to a small number of efforts themselves as the half progressed, but following a good move down the left Howard saw his shot go just wide. Deeping reverted to their more regular 4-4-2 after the break in preparation for the expected onslaught from the home side, who now had the wind at their backs. Stanground showed their intent with an early shot, which went narrowly wide, but they struggled to create clear opportunities as Deeping got players behind the ball and defended manfully. But, Stanground were back on terms mid way through the half. Rangers conceded a corner on their right and as the ball was swung in the home side levelled with a good header. From this point the game became quite scrappy as both sides searched for a winner. Both sides worked extremely hard, fighting the conditions as much as anything and though Stanground hit the bar late in the match, a draw was probably the fairest result. The result means that the 3 matches between these sides have finished with a win each and a draw which shows how well matched they are. For Deeping, avoiding defeat in two visits to Stanground this season shows just how far they have come as a team. After the match the Rangers boss was pleased with his team’s performance and said, “Although the lads were under a lot of pressure in the second half I thought they largely restricted Stanground to half chances and speculative efforts and once again showed fantastic spirit and workrate.”

Sun 18th February – Peterborough and District Junior Alliance – U12 League Cup Semi-Final -Stanground Juniors 2 v Deeping Rangers 3

Deeping Rangers U12s fought back brilliantly to overcome previously unbeaten Stanground in a thrilling league cup semi-final on Sunday. Despite falling 2 goals behind early in the game, Rangers produced a tremendous fightback to be level at the break and dug even deeper to claim their place in the final, edging a dramatic 2nd half. The match started at a frenetic pace, with both sides creating early opportunities. But Stanground struck first as a good cross from the right was met with a free header in the area to open the scoring. Deeping were struggling to get into their stride and slipped further behind on 10 mins when Stanground reacted quickest to a ball over the top of the visitor’s defence and a firm shot from the edge of the area beat the Ranger’s keeper to make it 2-0. At this point Rangers must have feared the worst, but the Clarets started to get a grip in midfield and to move the ball forward more quickly and on 20 mins they were back in the game. A great run down the right wing & into the area by Matt Sparrow saw him beat 2 defenders & cross to the back post. Harry Measures shot hit the post but top scorer Marcus Howard reacted quickly to stab the ball home. Rangers were really back in the game 5 mins before half-time, when following another break down the right by Reeve, Westley laid the ball across to Ryan Levin whose spectacular looping shot from the edge of the area beat the home keeper to equalise. Levin was unlucky with a similar effort just a minute later, but the half-time break came with the sides level. Stanground looked the livelier side at the start of the 2nd half and Deeping keeper Luke Gasson had to be alert early on as he reacted superbly to tip away a goalbound effort. In an end-to-end half, Rangers were unlucky not to create a chance following good work by Sadler. Measures could not quite force his shot home following a free kick and Lewis was unlucky with a shot from the edge of the area. Deeping restricted Stanground to a few efforts on goal and defended well throughout the half with Burdock & Errico looking solid in the middle of defence, supported ably by Parker & Venables on the flanks and with Gasson in fine form between the posts. As the half grew on it looked like this thriller could only be settled by some brilliance or a mistake and as the game entered the last 10 minutes it was brilliance that won the tie. A defensive clearance from Parker was collected by Lewis whose ball forward down the right was latched onto by Matt Sparrow. Outpacing 2 defenders, he struck a superb shot across the keeper & off the post to send Deeping to the final! The game was not won yet though and as Stanground searched for an equaliser Rangers continued to be alert at the back but also looked dangerous on the break with Levin shooting over and Westley being unlucky with 2 shots having found himself clear in the area. This was a tremendous team effort, but the unluckiest player of the day was skipper Dan Perkins who injured his knee in the warm-up and could not take the field. At least he now has the chance of an appearance in the final! Ranger’s manager Nigel Reeve was rightly proud of his team and said, “To come from two goals down to win against opponents as tough as Stanground was truly phenomenal. At 2-0 it would have been easy for them to drop their heads and accept the inevitable but instead of that they worked harder, started to believe in themselves, and muscled their way back into the game.”

Sun 4th February – Lincs FA U12 Cup QF – Deeping Rangers 3 v Metheringham FC 1

Deeping Rangers U12s season continued to go from strength to strength as they reached the semi-final of the Lincs County Cup with an excellent victory over Metheringham on Sunday. The Clarets produced another hard working display and although the margin of victory does not reflect their dominance of the game they must be elated to have a 2nd cup semi-final to look forward to. Rangers started the game brightly and dominated the first 15 minutes. Sparrow & Howard spurned early chances and the visitor’s defence scrambled away 2 other good attacks. But it was the visitors who struck first as their striker latched onto a good through ball and lobbed the advancing Ranger’s keeper to give them the lead on 15 minutes, completely against the run of play. Deeping continued to apply plenty of pressure and were unlucky to be caught out by the visitor’s off-side trap on a number of occasions and both Perkins & Sadler came close with opportunities in the Metheringham area. Rangers were back in the game on 25 minutes, though, as Jamie Reeve’s cross from the right wing was met by the un-marked Harry Measures at the back post and, having just come on as a sub, he scored with his first touch of the game. Deeping were unlucky not to take the lead before half-time as Levin’s shot from the edge of the area was tipped away by the visitor’s keeper. The 2nd half saw Deeping continue to take the game to their visitors from the Mid Lincs league. Jamie Reeve constantly found himself in good positions in the area and was unlucky on 3 separate occasions and Ben Lewis who worked tirelessly in midfield saw a good shot deflected wide. Matt Sparrow continued to threaten on the right and produced another good cross, but Measures was unable to control his shot which sailed over the bar. Rangers switched to 3 up front looking for a winner and their persistence paid dividends as with 10 minutes to go Measures latched onto a poor goal kick from the visitors and his cross reached Reeve who made no mistake with a good shot through a crowded 6 yd box. Only 3 minutes later Rangers sealed victory as another cross from the right was met by Measures, his initial effort only popped the ball up to head height but he reacted quickly to head home his second goal of the match. Metheringham applied some pressure late on, but the hard working Rangers defence held firm and they gained just reward for another good afternoons work. Once again, manager Nigel Reeve is a happy manager and said, “Even though we were incredibly unlucky not to convert many of the chances we created, the boys were dogged in their pursuit of victory and deserved the win.”

Sun 21st January 2007 – U12 League Cup Quarter-Final – Yaxley Red 1 v 3 Deeping Rangers

Deeping Rangers U12’s progressed to the semi finals of the league cup with an excellent victory at Yaxley on Sunday. This was another controlled & confident performance from the Clarets, who are going from strength to strength at the moment. Rangers were keen to avenge their worst defeat of the season, at Yaxley in October, and showed their intent from the off with early shots from both Howard & Sparrow. Playing with a strong wind at their backs Deeping continued to put Yaxley under pressure and took the lead after 6 mins. Marcus Howard controlled a loose ball in the area turned & shot in one movement, sending a diaganol shot across the keeper to open the scoring. Deeping were enjoying a lot of possession and creating numerous chances, only to find the home keeper in inspired form. On 20 mins a great passing move between Reeve & Sparrow almost ended with a goal as a Yaxley defender deflected a shot onto the post, and the follow up from Sparrow flashed across goal but the Deeping strikers were unable to get the vital touch. The Clarets were relieved to extend their lead further before half time and they did so with 2 goals in a minute. First a great cross from the right was met with a rasping shot from 10 yds by Howard giving the keeper no chance and taking his tally for the season to 16 goals. Almost immediately it was 3-0 as Ben Lewis’s great run into the area saw him evade the home defence and he made no mistake with a clean finish. Rangers had restricted Yaxley to rare attacks in the first half, but playing into the wind expected a tougher test for the second 30 mins. But Deeping started brightly again and should really have put the game beyond doubt, but chances either went begging, went wide or found the keeper still in good form. Although Yaxley came back into the game and put the visitor’s defence under some pressure they held firm and Deeping keeper Luke Gasson proved to be equal to anything thrown at him. As the half went on you could see the confidence growing throughout the Ranger’s team and they played some excellent passing football, but unfortunately were unable to convert any more of the numerous chances created. Yaxley did manage to stretch the visiting defence once, making the most of the gaps created with a tidy finish with 8 mins to go but it was to be no more than a consolation goal. Ranger’s manager Nigel Reeve was pleased with another composed team performance adding “I thought we started the match at a really good tempo and played some good football at times”. The only thing that could have made the day better would have been if the lads could have converted one of the numerous 2nd half chances that they created!

Sun 7th January 2007 – Lincs FA – U12 County Cup 3rd Round – Deeping Ranger 5 v 0 Billinghay Athletic

Deeping Rangers U12’s first match of 2007 saw them reach the last 8 of the County Cup with a convincing victory over Billinghay Athletic. Playing against unknown opponents and in blustery conditions Rangers performed well after a 3 week break with strong performances from all of the squad. Rangers started brightly and were unlucky with chances from 2 early corners. Billinghay were getting plenty of players behind the ball and were difficult to break down and looked dangerous on the break but without really threatening the Deeping goal. Persistence paid off for the Clarets after 20 mins when, following more pressure in the visitor’s area, the ball broke to leading scorer Marcus Howard on the edge of the 6 yd box and he struck a firm shot to give Deeping a deserved lead. Rangers continued to press and increased their lead before half time. Following another attack the ball was cleared to the edge of the area where Ryan Levin struck a great first time shot into the bottom corner. Deeping started the 2nd half determined to put the game beyond their visitors and almost did so following good work from Measures & Howard. Billinghay continued to look dangerous on the break and were awarded a penalty following a challenge in the area. Rangers keeper Luke Gasson was rewarded for standing his ground on the line as he made a great save as the penalty was struck straight at him. Making the most of their ‘let off’ Rangers did increase their lead following a good move involving Lewis & Reeve, whose pass found Matt Sparrow and he was rewarded for his efforts as he struck a crisp shot to make it 3-0. Rangers started to play better football at this stage and following a good move on the right Harrison Sadler made the most of the conditions as his cross/shot drifted on the wind and over the helpless keeper to make it 4-0. Billinghay continued to counter attack in search of a goal but thanks to a solid performance from the home defence Rangers managed to keep another clean sheet. The scoring was completed with 2 mins left as Jamie Reeve raced clear from just inside the visitor’s half, outpacing the defenders and lifting his shot over the advancing keeper from the edge of the area. This was a good performance from Rangers to get 2007 underway and they can now look forward to the draw for the Quarter Finals with confidence. After the match, Ranger’s manager Nigel Reeve said, “It was a good test against unfamiliar opponents and Billinghay were a fairly decent side who try to play football like ourselves.” On his team’s performance, Reeve added, “I thought we looked a bit rusty early on, but we improved in the second half as we passed the ball a lot better and played with more width, which enabled us to create plenty of chances.”

Sun 10th December 2006 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Division 1 – Whittlesey Junior Yellow 0 v 2 Deeping Rangers

Deeping Rangers U12s rounded off 2006 by extending their recent run of league victories with a 2-0 win at Whittlesey on Sunday. Having enjoyed a cup victory against the same opponents only 3 weeks ago, Rangers travelled full of confidence but encountered a home team determined to avoid another defeat. The morning started with some chaos and without a referee, who had decided the pitch was unplayable following a light frost. But the decision had come too late to stop Rangers travelling and the persistance of manager Nigel Reeve paid off as agreement was eventually reached for the game to go ahead. Rangers started with a new formation of 3-1-4-2 (not quite the England ‘Christmas tree’), but they settled quickly and were unlucky with a couple of early efforts. Deeping continued to put the home defence under pressure but came up against some resolute defending. The Clarets enjoyed plenty of possession in the opposition half, but Whittlesey were proving dangerous on the counter attack. There was one frantic spell of end-to-end football as Whittlesey were unlucky with a chance following a through ball, only to see Rangers race straight up the other end and a splendid passing move finishing with a shot just wide from Sparrow. But despite all the action, it was all square at the break. Deeping reverted to their regular 4-4-2 formation for the 2nd half and it almost paid dividends with 2 early chances to take the lead being spurned. Marcus Howard was unlucky with 2 shots, firing the second just wide after controlling a good ball from Charlie Venables. Rangers were almost punished for failing to take their chances and goalkeeper Luke Gasson kept them in the game, diving to his left to tip away a goalbound shot. The game became more evenly balanced with more end-to-end football but just as it looked like they might be frozen out, Rangers finally broke the deadlock with 10 mins to go. Errico’s ball into the area was met with a great shot from Matt Sparrow which hit the post, but Marcus Howard pounced first and slotted the loose ball past the helpless keeper. Deeping made the game safe 2 minutes later as Ben Lewis reacted quickly to a poor clearance from Whittlesey and his ball into the area found Howard unmarked facing an open goal – he made no mistake & took his tally to 13 goals for the season with a calm finish. Following the match, Rangers Manager Nigel Reeve summed up the morning’s events in two words “Patience & perserverance – both in convincing Whittlesey the game should go ahead and in the boy’s performance”. Reeve was also pleased to get another 3 points before Christmas as Rangers now have a break from league action until February. The victory leaves Deeping in 3rd place in Div 1 on 13 points, with the top 4 separated only by goal difference. Reeve added, “Since the disappointing defeat at Yaxley (in early October) I’ve been hugely impressed with the team’s progress and they are starting to dominate opponents whilst the quality of their football is improving from week to week. If we can continue in the same manner into the New Year I see no reason why we can’t have a successful end to the season – we just need the lads to keep up the good work!”.

Sun 3rd December 2006 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – U12 Division 1 – Deeping Rangers 5 v 0 Spalding Athletic

Deeping Rangers U12’s consolidated their position in the chasing pack in Division One with a comfortable home victory against Spalding on Sunday. Both teams battled with the very windy conditions but Rangers came out on top and completed the double over Spalding this season. Rangers realised how difficult conditions were as early as the 2nd minute when goalkeeper Luke Gasson saw his clearance from a back pass fly back over his head towards goal, but the danger was soon cleared. After that Rangers started to come to terms with the conditions and were unlucky with a couple of early efforts on goal. Hayden Errico had started the game well in midfield and he began the move for the first goal, finding Sadler with a neat pass. His shot was parried by the Spalding goalkeeper but the ball fell to Marcus Howard who finished with an easy tap-in from close range. The lead was extended 2 minutes later as Matt Sparrow finished a good run with a neat shot from the edge of the area. Deeping were enjoying the majority of possession and increased their lead further following a great move between Sadler, Sparrow & Howard whose shot gave the Spalding keeper no chance. The Clarets continued to create chances and Sparrow was unlucky with a penalty appeal as he was brought down in the area. More good play allowed Deeping to increase their lead again before half-time as Sadler finished with a firm shot from the right side of the area. The second half proved more difficult for both sides, Deeping struggled to create clear opportunities even though the wind was at their backs. Jamie Reeve was unlucky with a couple of early shots but chances were limited during the half and manager Nigel Reeve again took the opportunity to rotate his squad giving all the boys a run out on a cold day. Defensively Rangers coped well with the rare Spalding attacks, with all of the defence maintaining their focus and clearing any danger quickly. Just when it looked like the 2nd half would be goalless, in the final minute Westley flicked a good ball through to Marcus Howard who advanced into the area and completed his hat-trick with a clean finish. This was another good team performance from the Clarets and Nigel Reeve said after the game “I thought the lads showed great character performing so well in extremely difficult conditions. The most pleasing aspect was that we converted some early chances which then allowed us to relax a little and control the game.”

Sun 19th November 2006 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – League Cup 2nd Rnd – Whittlesey Junior Yellow o v 3 Deeping Rangers

Deeping Rangers U12’s enjoyed a comfortable victory at Whittlesey on Sunday as they progressed to the last 8 of the league cup. Once again Rangers started the match at a high tempo and came close with early shots from Sparrow, who hit the post, and Measures. Sadler was unlucky with a shot on 10 mins which the keeper saved and only minutes later a shot from Westley was fumbled by the Whittlesey keeper but they managed to scramble the ball away. The Clarets were on top for most of the first half, with Whittlesey only threatening in rare forays into Deeping territory. But Rangers were unable to find the goal that their superiority deserved and the score was even at the break. The half-time team talk obviously did the trick for Rangers and they took the lead early in the second half when a cross from Pearce Westley was turned into his own goal by a defender. Deeping looked to extend their advantage and Howard did just that with a shot following a strong run & cross by Matt Sparrow. This gave Rangers the cushion they needed and they continued to play good football in the 2nd half. The game was over with 10 mins to go when Deeping made it 3-0. Following a corner, a Rangers shot hit the post and Harrison Sadler reacted well and thundered an unstoppable shot past the home keeper. The delighted Rangers manager Nigel Reeve commented after the game, “We need to try and convert more of the chances which we’re creating early on in games (if only to stop me going as grey so quickly!!!!) . Apart from that though this was another solid all round performance with everyone contributing well.”

12 November 2006 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 12’s Division 1 – Sawtry Colts 1 v 3 Deeping Rangers

A 2 week lay-off seemed to have worked a treat for Deeping Rangers U12’s, as they returned to league action with an impressive performance to inflict the first defeat of the season on Sawtry Colts. This Remembrance Sunday meeting saw the two teams observe an impeccable silence before kick-off. Playing with the wind at their backs in the first half Rangers looked hungry for action after their break and started at a tremendous pace. Deeping were keen to get the ball forward as quickly as possible and were unlucky with 2 early shots from Howard, the 2nd following a great run from Matt Sparrow. Rangers were controlling the early exchanges, with Matt Sparrow at the heart of their attacking play, and after a good interchange with Westley, Sparrow fed Sadler whose shot was well saved. Only moments later Sadler was denied again by a good tackle from the advancing Sawtry keeper. On the quarter hour, though, Deeping survived a real scare as they were slow to react to a ball over the top and then relieved as the Sawtry shot hit the post and bounced to safety. Deeping re-grouped and continued to create chances, but could not find the target until they finally broke the deadlock after 22 minutes. The goal followed a tremendous, bustling run from Pearce Westley who picked the ball up just in the Sawtry half and eluded a number of defenders. As he got into the box the ball broke to Marcus Howard who finished with a good shot. 2 minutes later the Clarets extended their lead and Sparrow was rewarded for his efforts as he latched onto a through ball and finished with a good lob from the edge of the area. Moments before half time Rangers were unlucky not to extend the lead further as Sadler saw his effort go just over the bar. Deeping wondered whether a 2 goal cushion would be enough but they started the 2nd half determined to increase their lead further and Howard was unlucky with a shot that went just wide. But, the 3rd goal did come as Levin played a good ball towards the Sawtry area and Marcus Howard bagged his 2nd goal of the afternoon as he slid the ball under the advancing Sawtry keeper. At this point Sawtry rallied and started to play their best football of the match, threatening the Rangers goal with a couple of shots and a header that went just wide. The Deeping defence was involved in a busy period and mid-way through the half Sawtry gave themselves a lifeline with a shot from the edge of the area that eluded keeper Gasson. It looked as though Rangers could be in for a tough period against a resurgent Sawtry team and there was some backs to the wall defending for 10 minutes, but they restricted the home side to long range efforts from outside the area. Rangers withstood the pressure well and managed to defend a little further up the field for the remainder of the match and also managed to create a couple of late chances. But, there were no other changes to the score in the 2nd half and Rangers should be pleased with a strong team performance, in which Manager Nigel Reeve was able to give all the lads a good run out, and with a well earned 3 points. After the match manager Nigel Reeve commented, “Apart from a jittery 10 min spell midway through the 2nd half it was a good all round performance against a decent side, perhaps we should have converted a few more of the chances which we created but overall a good return to action.”

Sun 15th October 2006 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 12’s League Cup Rnd 1 – Northborough 2 v 5 Deeping Rangers

Rangers got back to winning ways with a hard fought, but deserved, derby victory in an exciting league cup tie against near neighbours Northborough. Playing at Deeping, due the home pitch being unavailable, this was a game where players from both sides were well known to each other and it was important that the focus was on the match rather than on friendships. The game got off to a cracking start with 3 goals in the first 10 minutes. The clarets took the lead on 6 minutes when Matt Sparrow finished off a great run with an excellent chip from the edge of the area. Only a minute later Jamie Reeve put Marcus Howard in and he finished with a good shot to extend the lead. Deeping were unlucky with a couple of other chances, but just as they might have though they would have a comfortable afternoon they found Northborough in no mood to lie down. After one near miss Northborough pulled the score back to 2-1 as Piper was left unmarked and he met a Hudson corner with a great header from 8 yds out. Whilst Deeping attempted to impose themselves on the game Northborough were always dangerous on the break and 5 mins before half-time they took advantage from another corner. This time the ball from the Northborough right was not cleared and Deeping could not keep out the shot from 6 yds. Chances were exchanged before half-time and Measures was unlucky not to put Rangers back in front after he flashed a great shot across goal following a good-run. 2-2 at half-time was a fair reflection of the first half and Northborough were certainly not being outclassed by opponents from 2 divisions higher. Rangers started the 2nd half determined to get back in front and Measures was unlucky with 2 early chances. They did manage to regain the lead 10 mins into the half, with the sort of goal that you need sometimes, as a ball across the area bounced somewhat luckily to Levin who finished well. Within 5 minutes the game was over as Rangers extended their lead further thanks to 2 goals from Harry Measures. His first was a calm finish as he slid the ball under the advancing keeper, the 2nd more spectacular as he latched onto a high cross-field ball with a looping shot, from the edge of the area, which crept in under the bar. A good performance from Rangers, who looked solid throughout and were pleased to welcome back Matt Burdock following a spell at Posh. A very pleased Rangers manager, Nigel Reeve, commented after the game, “ It was a much more solid performance this week and the lads responded to my request for more commitment and desire, whilst playing some good football at times.”

Sun 24th September 2006 -Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – League Cup Preliminary Rnd – Blackstones JFC 0 v 4 Deeping Rangers

Deeping Rangers u12’s began the League Cup trail on Sunday with a hard fought victory over Blackstones. Although Rangers may have hoped for an easy run out against opponents from Division 4 they were made to fight all the way for their win by a Blackstones side who worked extremely hard and battled well throughout. Playing up hill in the first half, Rangers started at a tremendous pace, threatening the Blackstones goal from the off. But the rain that got heavier just as the game kicked off meant that a wet ball, on a skiddy pitch, was difficult to control and both sides struggled to maintain any possession. Deeping enjoyed the best of the first half and created numerous half chances, but without ever playing the controlled football they are capable of. Although they spent a lot of time in the Blackstones half, they found the home defence and goalkeeper in good form, as well as sending a number of shots and headers just wide. Just as the Deeping faithful were beginning to think it might be one of those days, the deadlock was broken on the stroke of half-time. After an excellent weaving run down the right hand side by Matt Sparrow, his cross to the far post was headed in neatly by Harry Measures. Blackstones had been restricted to a handful of forays into Deeping territory in the first half and Rangers started at the same pace after the break, extending their lead after 2 minutes when a cross from Harrison Sadler was finished with a good shot from Measures. Blackstones pressed to get back into the game and created the odd scare for the Rangers defence who dealt with all that was thrown at them. As Blackstones came forward, gaps appeared and Rangers went further ahead following a good move, which ended with a great save from the Blackstones goalkeeper, who was unlucky to see the ball rebound to Ryan Levin who headed home The scoring was completed with 5 mins to go as a ball across the area from Reeve gave Sadler a simple tap-in. All in all a solid performance from Deeping who now progress to the 1st Round proper After the match, Rangers Manager Nigel Reeve said, “Credit to Blackstones, a very hardworking and committed team, but we matched them for work-rate and thankfully in the end our extra quality was the difference”

Sun 17th September 2006 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 12’s Division 1 – Spalding Athletic 0 v5 Deeping Rangers

Deeping Rangers under 12’s got their season up and running with an emphatic 5-0 victory at Spalding on Sunday. Following last weeks defeat, in a tight encounter, against last season’s champions Stanground, Rangers enjoyed a more comfortable afternoon as new signings Marcus Howard (with 2) and Ben Lewis with a hat-trick on his league debut, contributed all 5 goals. Rangers started the game at a strong pace and Jamie Reeve was unlucky with a couple of early efforts. But it was not long before Rangers went in front, after good work on the left from Howard whose cross was met with a firm shot by Lewis from 12 yds. Deeping continued to have the majority of possession and created a number of good chances, but they were thwarted by some slack finishing and a Spalding goalkeeper who played well throughout. They increased their lead on the stroke of half-time as Howard pounced for a shot in the area which was well saved, but he reacted quickly to score from the rebound. The second half continued in the same pattern, with Deeping enjoying plenty of possession but struggling to create clear cut scoring opportunities. Numerous half-chances went begging as Sadler, Sparrow & Westley all had opportunities to finish the game off, but Rangers went further ahead when a cross from the left from Measures was met well by Lewis who finished calmly in the area.Deeping continued to dominate and started to pass the ball better in the 2nd half. With 10 minutes left Ben Lewis, who had got forward well from midfield all afternoon, was brought down in the area. He marked his competitive debut for Rangers by getting up to strike the penalty firmly to make it 4-0. The scoring was completed with 5 minutes left as Howard picked the ball up on the right side of the area and struck a firm shot to the bottom corner. Rangers defended well all afternoon and restricted Spalding to only a handful of chances. After the match, Rangers manager Nigel Reeve commented “After starting really well and taking the early lead I think the lads knew that it would be a comfortable afternoon and started doing things they wouldn’t normally do. Second half they got back to playing the passing football we expect. With a little more composure at times we could have scored a lot more than we did.”

Season 2005/06

19 March 2006. Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 11’s Division 1. Sawtry Colts 1 Deeping Rangers 0

Rangers hopes of confirming their place in the top three of Zone One were blown off course at a windy Sawtry on Sunday, as they failed to capitalise on their possession and lost to a speculative late strike. Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, Rangers quickly took control of the game with both Matt Sparrow and Harrison Sadler looking dangerous and forcing a number of early corners. But, despite excellent delivery of the corners by Sparrow, the other strikers were unable to connect with them. Sawtry were finding it difficult to break into the Deeping half but when they did the defence played as a unit, keeping things very tight. Rangers continued to enjoy the majority of the ball, but struggled to judge the pace of their through balls with the strong wind. Sadler again had opportunities, bursting into the area but unable to get power behind his shot and then hitting over following good work on the right by Jamie Reeve.Despite their pressure Rangers struggled to make clear cut openings, with balls skidding across the six yard box but no one able to get on the end of them and Harry Hudson just failing to get his header on target following a great cross from Sparrow. Deeping expected to come under pressure in the second half, playing into the strong, bitterly cold, wind but they started well and again had the better of the early chances with Hudson shooting just wide. The threat that was expected from Sawtry did not materialise and Rangers continued to enjoy the best of the match and push for a goal, with Reeve having a shot and header, both of which went narrowly wide. It was beginning to look like ‘one of those days’ for Rangers as they were frustrated time and again as they just failed to connect with good balls into the area. At one point there were three Rangers players at the far post for a cross but still Sawtry managed to clear. With five minutes to go Deeping fell behind as a Sawtry striker, in a rare attack, beat 2 Rangers defenders and shot from the edge of the area into the roof of the net, giving Matt Howell no chance. It was probably their only shot on target during the game, but they made the most of it. Rangers applied some late pressure, bringing Adam Brown on as an extra attacker but some desperate defending from Sawtry prevented Rangers from scoring. Rangers have the opportunity to avenge this defeat and secure third spot as they face the same opponents at home this Sunday. Rangers manager Nigel Reeve commented after the game, “That’s the most gutted I’ve felt on a Sunday night all season. It’s hard to accept, knowing that we should have won the game with the chances created. It’s probably the first time this season that our finishing has consistently let us down throughout the course of a game. We’ll be focussing on shooting practice at training this week.” Man of the match: Harrison Sadler

Deeping: Howell, Parker, Burdock, Perkins, Venables, Westley, Reeve, Measures, Sparrow, Sadler, Hudson, Brown, Bedford. Subs not used: Shattock.

12 March 2006. Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 11’s Division 1. Deeping Tangers 2 Stangroud Povers 2

It seemed like mission impossible for Deeping Rangers under 11’s. In order for the Outgang Road side to finish runners up in the Junior Alliance Division One nothing less than a win was required against champions elect Stanground Rovers, a side with a one hundred percent league and cup record. What unfolded over sixty minutes was junior football of its highest quality with Rangers pulling off the result of the season by ending Stangrounds incredible run, yet not grabbing the three points they needed and deserved.Deeping started the game the stronger of the two teams with the pairing of Harrison Sadler and Pearce Westley stamping their authority in midfield. On five minutes Rangers top marksman Matthew Sparrow latched onto a through ball from midfield, and after out running the Stanground defence his shot from eight yards was superbly saved by the visiting goalkeeper. Five minutes later and the Clarets threatened again when Jamie Reeves first time shot from outside the box forced the goalkeeper to save at his near post. Sparrow and Reeves pace continued to cause problems for the Stanground defence and on eleven minutes Rangers finally broke through. Sparrow again ran onto a pass from midfield and after leaving his two markers standing he lofted his shot over the out-coming keeper to take the lead. The home side were playing with a greater confidence and belief. On seventeen minutes they again tested the league leaders when Harry Measures found space inside the penalty area only to see his shot go narrowly wide. On twenty-one minutes Measures got his reward. Sparrow’s electric pace again exposed the Stanground defence after collecting a pass from captain Dan Perkins. The strikers shot was parried by the Rovers goalkeeper into the path of Measures who slotted it home from close range. A stern half-time talk seemed to do the trick for Rovers as they emerged for the second half like a different team. Within five minutes of the re-start the visitors had halved the deficit. League top scorer Mancuso pounced onto a loose ball and fired into an empty goal after a mix up in the home defence. The goal gave the visitors a lift. On forty minutes Rovers nearly levelled the score when a shot from the right beat Howell but rebounded off the post to safety. Three minutes later and the scores were level. The home defence failed to clear the ball from danger leaving Mancuso to slot the wide Howell. The Rangers central defensive pairing of Matthew Burdock and Perkins were being kept busy. On forty five minutes Perkins reaction goal line header prevented the visitors from taking the lead. Stanground continued in their search for the winner and they would have found it but for a string of excellent saves from Howell. The Rangers keeper commanded his penalty area superbly, bravely diving at the feet of the Stanground strikers on three occasions and then spectacularly stretching to push a long shot round the post when it looked a certain goal.At the final whistle both teams seemed pleased with sharing the points in what was and excellent advert for junior football. After the game Rangers manager Nigel Reeve commented, “The lads were understandably a bit rusty having not played a competitive match for five weeks, but this was a game where their battling qualities really shone through. They gave a fantastic effort, especially in the second half. They should be really proud, as I am, of being the first team to take points off Stanground this season.” Man of the match: Matt Howell

5th February 2006. Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 11’s Division 1. Abbey Athketic 3 Deeping Rangers 0

Rangers slipped to their second league defeat of the season on Sunday, when they were punished for a couple of defensive lapses by a well organised Abbey side. Playing at Werrington for the second week running, Deeping enjoyed plenty of possession during the game but struggled to break through a resolute home defence in a game which was critical for both sides, as they chase what will realistically be the runners-up spot behind league leaders, Stanground. The game started at a fast pace with both sides looking lively on a bumpy pitch. Abbey had the best of the early exchanges, but Rangers back four held firm with Matt Burdock playing at centre-half for the second week running always looking strong. The Clarets had their moments in attack, but the Abbey goalkeeper was alert and was always ready to race from his line to cut-out any danger.Abbey took the lead in the twenty-fifth minute when the Rangers defence took too long to clear the ball from their six yard box and an Abbey striker pounced and shot across Matt Howell into the bottom corner. Deeping almost levelled things immediately following an attack down the right when Matt Sparrow’s cross / shot to the far post went narrowly wide. Only minutes later though, failure to clear effectively cost Deeping again as the ball was picked up on the edge of the area and the Abbey striker struck a shot into the roof of the net. Just before half-time the crowd were treated to a close-up view of a hot air balloon, which caused some alarm as it seemed to be travelling perilously close to the rooftops of Werrington! As the second half began and Deeping attempted to pull back the Abbey lead the balloon pulled away to avert any danger, much to everyone’s relief. Having defended a series of corners well Rangers started to threaten at the other end with good runs & crosses from both Harrison Sadler & Harry Hudson just failing to find a Rangers shirt in the area and a free kick from Matt Sparrow which went just wide. Despite their efforts the game was put beyond Deeping mid way through the half after some excellent skill as Bird beat two defenders and chipped in from the edge of the area to make it 3 – 0. Rangers heads did not drop, though, and Matt Sparrow continued his tireless running but could not find the opening that would have given the goal that their performance deserved. The result leaves Rangers in second place in the league and sets up an exciting end to the season with just four games to go. Rangers manager Nigel Reeve was not too downhearted after the game commenting, “Coming up against a good team who played well on the day we struggled to create clear-cut chances, although not through the lack of trying. Once again though, I couldn’t fault the level of effort and commitment from the lads.” Man of the match: Matt Burdock

29th January 2006. Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 11’s Division 1. Peterborough City 0 Deeping Rangers 12

Rangers put their recent cup exit well and truly behind them as they destroyed bottom side Peterborough City in emphatic style. Four goals from top-scorer Matthew Sparrow, two each from Harrison Sadler, Harry Hudson and Dan Perkins, and singles from Harry Measures and Jamie Reeve ensured the Outgang Road outfit maintained their second place position and remain hot on the heels of league leaders Stanground Rovers. In the early stages of the game Nigel Reeve’s team must have thought that it was not to be their day as their early pressure didn’t reap the rewards it was due. In the second minute a Measures shot was saved from point blank range. This was followed moments later when Pearce Westley fired wide. The frustration continued when another Measures shot was saved and Sparrow fired his effort narrowly wide. Rangers finally broke the deadlock on seventeen minutes after a terrific Sparrow run and far post cross from the right was met by Measures who tapped home from close range. Six minutes later and Deeping had doubled their lead as Sparrow’s snap-shot from six yards left the home goalkeeper with little chance. Within a minute Rangers were three goals to the good as Hudson lashed a first time shot from outside the box just inside the keeper’s right post. Just before the break the visitors made it four when Matthew Burdock, playing centre-back went on an explosive run down the left wing and picked out Sparrow at the far post, who duly poked it away. In the second half it could have tempting for the other Rangers players to get some goal scoring glory themselves. But credit to Reeve and his team they didn’t, keeping their shape and discipline. The defence in particular looked resolute, with Matthew Burdock, Harry Shattock, Jack Bedford and Adam Brown closing down every City attack, giving keeper Matthew Howell a very quiet afternoon. At the other end it was far from quiet as Rangers continued their onslaught. On thirty-four minutes Jamie Reeve was rewarded for his endless hard work when Shattock, after winning the ball inside the Deeping half slotted a ball into space for Reeve to run onto and duly smash inside the near post. A minute later and Sadler made it six by running onto a Sparrow pass and firing passed the helpless keeper from six yards. Reeve was in on the action for Rangers seventh when his shot after a run down the right was saved only for Sparrow to tap home the rebound for his hat-trick. Reeve continued to cause the City defence all sorts of problems and again after a run down the right he picked out Sadler who coolly rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net. On forty nine minutes Sparrow nearly added his fourth but was deprived when his shot from just inside the City area came crashing back off the woodwork. With ten minutes to go captain Dan Perkins claimed his first goal of the season. After breaking from midfield and shrugging of the tracking defender he tapped home the rebound after his initial shot was saved. On fifty-seven minutes Hudson claimed his second and Deeping’s tenth after a curling a left footed shot in spectacular fashion inside the far post from twenty yards out. Rangers continued to push forward and in particular Perkins who added his second of the game when after a goalmouth scramble he poked it under the City goalkeeper.Rangers rounded of their afternoons work with a superb individual goal from Sparrow. The Rangers marksman, after controlling a poor goal kick fired into an open goal from twenty yards out. Deeping manager Reeve commented after the game, “In what was a fairly comfortable game the most pleasing thing from my point of view was the manor in which the lads continued to play the game as the goals flowed. We talked about the importance of not trying to ‘showboat’ too much, but to keep playing the football that we have been all season and on the whole they did so. It was nice that the goals were spread about a bit too.” The result leaves Rangers four points behind Stanground and sets up for a thrilling game against third placed Abbey on Sunday. Man of the match: Jack Bedford

15th January 2006. Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 11’s Cup 3rd Rnd. Wisbech St Mary Purple 3 Deeping Rangers 0

Rangers under 11’s cup dreams were ended this year after they suffered only their 2nd defeat of the season at Wisbech on Sunday. Deeping always knew this would be a tough quarter-final as they travelled to face the Div 2 table toppers who are unbeaten all season, and Wisbech proved to be very competitive opponents. There was a scare as early as the first minute when a long range shot rebounded off the crossbar and the follow up was tipped away athletically by Matt Howell. But, Rangers began to get a foothold in the game and created opportunities following a good run by Matt Sparrow and from a shot by Harrison Sadler. Their best chance of the half followed good work on the left and an excellent cross from Harry Hudson, which no one could connect with as it flashed across the 6 yd box. Wisbech were always dangerous though and some resolute defending from Deeping, with solid tackling from Dan Perkins and Harry Shattock, was needed to keep the scores level. But Rangers fell behind 5 mins before half-time as yet another through ball was played over the top of the defence and the Wisbech striker outpaced the last defender before taking the ball round the keeper and finishing from a tight angle. Deeping started the 2nd half determined to get back in the game and to put pressure on Wisbech. Matt Sparrow had an early chance with a shot and Harry Measures just failed to capitalise on a shot following a run down the right by Jamie Reeve. Rangers were struggling to find the pass to break through the Wisbech defence, though, and the home side suffered a number of minor injuries causing breaks in play which made it harder for Rangers to maintain any period of sustained pressure. The Rangers defence continued to be busy with Matt Howell clearing well and Harry Shattock making a number of telling tackles, one of which lead to a break for Matt Sparrow, who released Harry Measures but once again he met a solid defence and the opportunity passed. With 10 mins left Wisbech made it 2–0 following a dangerous run into the area. The Clarets were unable to clear the ball and a cross from the right was met by a scuffed shot which found its way through the Deeping defenders on the line. As much as Deeping pushed to get back into the game they could not create an opening and it was all over when another ball over the top allowed the striker to outpace the visitors defence and score cleanly. Rangers continued to look for a consolation goal but it wasn’t to be. Deeping can now concentrate on the league and on consolidating their position in the top 2. Deeping manager Nigel Reeve said after the game, “The lads put in a much improved and very committed performance. We found it difficult to play our usual wide attacking game on what was a very narrow pitch.” Man of the match: Harry Shattock

Deeping: Howell, Parker, Perkins, Shattock, Venables, Hudson, Burdock, Reeve, Measures, Sparrow, Sadler, Brown.

8th January 2006. Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 11’s Division 1. Glinton United Red 3 Deeping Ranger 4

Deeping Rangers under 11’s started the New Year with maximum points but they were far from easy to come by. Two goals in the last five minutes from Matthew Sparrow and Harry Measures secured the points, but up until then it looked like the Clarets were returning back to Deeping empty handed. Rangers started the game looking as if they were still suffering from the New Year celebrations, conceding their first goal as early as the second minute. The home side midfielder slotted a great through ball for the striker to run on to, and after turning his marker he poked it passed Rangers keeper Matthew Howell. Two minutes later and Glinton missed a golden opportunity to increase their lead when their centre forward after just beating the Deeping offside trap, struck his shot wide of Howells right hand post. Glintons lead only lasted four minutes when Rangers grabbed an equaliser through Measures. After a break down the right wing from Reeve, his cross to the far post was met by Measures who stabbed home from close range for his thirteenth league goal of the season. On a very heavy pitch chances were few and far between with the majority of play being battled out in midfield. Rangers best efforts were coming from the right hand side where neat inter passing between attacking full back Oliver Parker, Jamie Reeve and Sparrow were causing the home side defence some problems. The next clear cut chance however fell to Glinton, when on seventeen minutes a one handed reflex save from Howell managed to force the ball over the bar after a shot from point blank range. Deeping started the second half a lot brighter and were soon into their stride. On twenty-three minutes they took the lead after Harrison Sadler’s cross from the left was met by Reeve at the far post to fire home. With ten minutes remaining Glinton pulled it back to two each when a cross from the right into a very crowded penalty area ended up crossing the goal line. On fifty five minutes the home side took the lead when another cross from the right caused havoc in the Deeping defence and the ball was poked passed Howell from close range. A minute later and it would have been a fourth Glinton goal but for a last gasp goal line clearance from full back Jack Bedford. With Rangers playing below their best and only three minutes left on the clock it looked like Glinton had done enough to secure the points. But what unfolded before the final whistle was pure drama. On fifty-eight minutes Sparrow’s instinctive first time shot, after a neat turn found its way passed the Glinton goalkeeper. And then in the last minute Measures pounced on a loose ball after a goalmouth scramble to place wide of the keeper for Deeping’s winner. Clarets manager Nigel Reeve said after the game “We were fortunate to win, but three points are three points, however you get them. What with a heavy pitch and half the team poorly during the week there were a lot of tired and weary legs towards the end, but credit to the lads for digging deep in the last five minutes and finding some energy from somewhere to score two late goals to win it”. Man of the match: Oliver Parker

Deeping: Howell, Parker, Perkins, Shattock, Bedford, Hudson, Burdock, Reeve, Measures, Sparrow, Sadler, Westley, Brown.

At the turn of the year the under 11s are 2nd in their league having won 9 and drawn 1 of their 11 games and with an average score of 4-1

13th November 2005. Peterborough & District Junior Alliance – Under 11’s League Cup 2nd Round. Spalding Athletic 1 Deeping Rangers 6

Rangers continued their fine run of form, with a convincing victory in the 2nd round of the league cup. After a somewhat subdued start to the match, on a cold afternoon, Deeping took control with two goals mid-way through the first half. Jamie Reeve opened the scoring with an excellent turn & shot, at the near post, following a corner and Rangers extended their lead after a neat passing move down the right, when Reeve’s cross was headed in at the far post by Measures. Although Deeping looked comfortable leading up to half-time, Spalding pulled a goal back with a shot from the left, following a rare foray into the Deeping area.Rangers emerged for the 2nd half determined to put the game out of reach and extended their lead after 4 minutes when Reeve was on hand at the far post to convert a cross after good work by Sparrow. Deeping continued to enjoy the majority of the possession and following a good ball over the top from Burdock, Sparrow held off the Spalding defence to make it 4-1 with a firm shot. With less than 10 minutes to go, a cross from the left by Sparrow was deflected into his own goal by a Spalding defender, under pressure from the Deeping attackers. Rangers completed their scoring, and Reeve his hat-trick, as he latched on to a through ball on the right, outpacing the last defender and coolly slipping the ball under the advancing keeper. Rangers manager Nigel Reeve said after the game “I’m thrilled to be in the draw for the quarter finals. After a reasonable first half performance the boys responded well to our half-time chat and then dominated the second period with some excellent wing play and great finishing”. Rangers can now concentrate on league action until the next round of the cup early in 2006. Man of the match: Jamie Reeve

6 November 2005 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance League – Under 11’s Division 1 – Deeping Rangers 2 Abbey Athletic Gold 0

Rangers manager Nigel Reeve’s pre match motivation and tactics certainly paid off as his Deeping team pulled off a deserved two-nil victory against Abbey Athletic Gold in the Peterborough Junior Alliance League Division 1. The Clarets boss message to his players was clear to see, as each and every one of them battled relentlessly to earn the maximum points and leapfrog Abbey into second place in the process. In very wet and windy conditions the home side settled the quicker of the two teams with the midfield and defence quickly sticking to their tasks and not giving the visitors any time on the ball. Although the majority of the first fifteen minutes of play was spent in the Deeping half the visitors couldn’t break through the home defence with the full backs Charlie Venables and Oliver Parker cutting out a series of attacks down the flanks. The Clarets took the lead on sixteen minutes after a pass back to the Abbey goalkeeper was chased down by top scorer Matthew Sparrow. Although the visiting keeper got to the ball first his clearance was blocked by Sparrow who then followed up the rebound to side foot home into an open goal. Abbey responded well with another succession of attacks on goal. The central defensive pairing of Harry Shattock and Dan Perkins looked solid though, and the two late chances that Abbey did have were woefully wasted, with the first blazed wide and the second going well over the crossbar. The second half started at the same high tempo as the first with the Matthew Burdock and Pearce Westley threading balls from midfield for Sparrow, Jamie Reeve and Harry Measure to chase. Abbey wasted a golden opportunity to grab an equaliser on forty minutes when their centre forwards strike hit the post and rolled across goal before being cleared. Rangers increased their lead midway through the second half when Sparrow, after beating the offside trap and out-sprinting the Abbey defence lofted the ball over the out coming goalkeeper for his fourteenth of the season. This signalled Reeve’s next tactical move by bringing on the more defensive pairing of Adam Brown and Jack Bedford to play in front of the back four to secure the victory. Rangers comfortably soaked up the Abbey pressure for the remainder of the match and duly celebrated their three points and first ever victory over Abbey when the referee blew the final whistle. Rangers manager Reeve said after the game, “I’m chuffed to bits. Everyone of the lads gave 110% effort and commitment in what were difficult conditions. They proved today, to themselves more than anybody that they deserve to be up there amongst the top 3 or 4 teams at this level.” Man of the match: Charlie Venables

Deeping: Howell, Parker, Perkins, Shattock, Venables , Measures, Burdock, Reeve, Sparrow, Venables, Westley, Hudson. Brown, Bedford.

16 October 2005 – Peterborough & District Junior Alliance League – Under 11’s Cup 1st Round _ Yaxley 2 Rangers 4

Rangers progressed into the 2nd round of the U 11 Cup following their victory over Yaxley Black in a pulsating cup tie. Rangers were aware that they had to be at their best in what could have been a tricky tie and in a competitive first half they struggled to break down the home side, who proved to be dangerous on the break. With clear-cut chances at a premium the sides were still level 0-0 at half time, at which point no one could foresee the excitement to come after the break. The game came to life early in the second-half, when Yaxley took the lead, following a corner, with a strike from fully twenty-five yards giving the keeper no chance. The goal gave Deeping a ‘wake up call’ and they found their stride immediately and following good work by Sparrow and Sadler in the area, Measures was on hand to equalise. As the morning brightened up, so did Rangers’ play and they continued to create chances. After more good work from Sparrow on the right, his cross was converted at the back-post by Venables to give Deeping the lead. Five minutes later & Rangers were 3-1 up when Sparrow was on hand to convert a Measures cross from the left. A mix up in the Deeping defence allowed Yaxley back in as they made it 3-2, but Rangers continued to press and latching onto a through-ball, Sparrow restored the two goal lead scoring with a shot which went ‘in off the post’. Rangers ensured they kept things tight for the final 10 minutes and were pleased to be in the draw for the next round. Clarets manager Nigel Reeve said after the game “I thought the lads worked hard first half but they lacked a little bit of composure and quality in the final third. Second half after conceding they sparked into life and scored four well worked goals from excellent wing play.” Man of the match: Matt Sparrow

Deeping: Brown, Parker, Shattock, Perkins, Bedford, Measures, Venables, Reeve, Burdock, Sadler, Sparrow.

9 October: Peterborough & District Junior Alliance League – Under 11’s Division 1: Deeping Rangers 3 v Glinton United Red 2

Harrison Sadler topped a fantastic individual performance with two instinctive second half goals. The midfielder’s late strikes against a very well organised Glinton United ensured three valuable points for the Outgang Road side. Rangers started the game slowly with the visitors enjoying the majority of early possession. Glinton used the width of the pitch to their advantage by stretching the home midfield and defence. On four minutes the visitors deservedly took the lead when Rangers keeper Matthew Howell’s goal kick was intercepted on the right. The Glinton striker out ran the Deeping defence and fired over Howell into the top left hand corner. The Clarets responded well and on sixteen minutes were level after a Matthew Sparrow free kick from the right found Harry Measures, who after a luscious turn fired his shot past the visitor’s goalkeeper. Within four minutes Glinton had restored their lead when their pacy centre forward beat the offside trap and shot wide of Howells stretching right hand. Strong words from Rangers manager Nigel Reeve at half-time had an immediate effect as the home side re-started like a completely different team. The central midfield pairing of Sadler and Matthew Burdock soon stamped their authority on the game winning the majority of tackles and loose balls. On forty-five minutes Rangers were rewarded for their efforts when Sadler’s glancing header from a Sparrow corner crept in at the near post. Deeping continued to pass the ball well and created a number of goal scoring opportunities, the best of which falling to Measures who saw his fifty-second minute header cleared off the line. With five minutes remaining the home side sealed a memorable victory. After a run down the right wing Sparrow pulled the ball back to Jamie Reeve, whose first time shot after rebounding off the post was stabbed home by Sadler from close range. Clarets manager Reeve said afterwards “At half time I told the boys to get amongst them more and that if they raised their game by 30% we’d get a result. They worked really hard for each other in the second half, played much better football and ground out a great win.” Man of the match: Harrison Sadler

Deeping:Howell, Parker, Perkins, Brown, Bedford, Measures, Burdock, Reeve, Sadler, Sparrow, Hudson, Shattock Venables, Westley.

2 October: Peterborough & District Junior Alliance League – Under 11’s Division 1: Yaxley 1 v Deeping Rangers 2.

Rangers returned to winning ways on Sunday with a hard earned but deserved victory at Yaxley. It took time to come to terms with the bumpy pitch, but once into their stride Rangers played some fluent football and created numerous opportunities. But a combination of bad luck, good goalkeeping and an efficient off-side trap meant they were unable to open the scoring. With Yaxley looking dangerous on the break, resolute defending & some good goalkeeping meant a goalless scoreline at half-time. Rangers finally got their reward early in the 2nd half when, following good work on the edge of the area, Sparrow’s chip beat the keeper but hit the bar, Reeve was on hand to knock home the rebound. Whilst searching for a 2nd goal, Rangers were unlucky to be pegged back as Yaxley, continuing to be dangerous on the break, equalised with a deflected shot which looped over goalkeeper, Howell. A tense 15 minutes ensued as both sides had chances for a winner, but Rangers got the break they deserved in the final minute as Sparrow, weaving towards goal, was brought down in the area. He got to his feet and held his nerve to hit the penalty firmly into the roof of the net. Man of the match: Dan Perkins

Deeping: Howell, Parker, Brown, Perkins, Bedford, Measures, Westley, Reeve, Sadler, Sparrow, Hudson. Subs not used: Shattock
