Thurlby Tigers (Away) League

The boy’s final league game of the season, away to Thurlby, could they go through the entire league season undefeated?

On a lovely spring day, on a perfect pitch, the game started, and as in most of the games this season Deeping went straight on the attack, and this was to be the pattern of the entire game, with Tom, Kuda and Daniel causing problems for the Thurlby defence, that they were just unable to handle throughout, with some fine passing moves. Within the first few minutes Deeping must have created at least four good scoring opportunities, but each seemed to be blocked or saved, it was only a matter of time before the breakthrough would come, Daniel and Tom linked up superbly, Tom finding Daniel in space, and Daniel finishing well to the keepers right. Thurlby then created their only scoring opportunities of the match when a cross was fired across the area, but no striker was there to capitalise. Just before the break, a clearance from the Thurlby defence, was excellently brought under control by Jack, he created a little bit of space for himself, and fired into the back of the net from fully 20 yards, a goal that his becoming his trademark, the scoreline of 2-0 at halftime didn’t really reflect the play, as Deeping were really playing some wonderful football.

The second half continued as the first, with Deeping totally on top, and a lovely move down the right found Daniel in space and he crossed for Lucas to tap home number three. A few minutes later, the roles were reversed, as Lucas set Daniel up for his second, finishing almost identically to his first goal. Thurlby really couldn’t handle Deeping’s forward play, as a lovely pass through the middle from Kuda was finished superbly by Lucas with the outside of his boot. There was still time for Daniel to strike the post, and then just before the end a cross from Lucas trying to set Daniel up for another goal was deflected into the Thurlby net by one of their own players for an own goal.

The performance of the boys in this match was outstanding, maybe the best of the season.

Final score 0-6 (and the league season finished with Deeping Blues remaining unbeaten throughout, a fantastic achievement)

Second match - Friendly

The second match started, and as usual the boys were played in different positions from the first game, but it didn’t really make that much difference, as in the first match the game was played mainly in the Thurlby half. It wasn’t long before the chances started to come, but unlike in the first game, the finishing wasn’t as crisp, but Kuda was troubling the Thulby defence with his powerful runs, and it was fitting that he should open the scoring, poking through the keepers legs following a pass from Oliver. The second half was only seconds old, when Deeping scored the second and final goal of the match, fantastic link up play between Adam, Kuda and Oliver finishing with Oliver scoring low to the keepers left, Jack also hitting the post, and Tom in outstanding form at the back in defence. In the last minute Thurlby had 3 corners in quick succession, but couldn’t force a shot on target .These two matches continued our excellent unbeaten run to 28 matches

Final score 0-2

Player of the day - Tom, outstanding forward link up play in the first match, and superb in defence in the second game.

This is my final report of the 2008-09 season, I hope you have enjoyed reading them, as much as I have enjoyed writing about our fantastic team.

21st March 2009

Yaxley (Away) - Friendly

First match

These matches were played in complete contrast in weather conditions to when they boys met previously, a beautiful sunny spring morning, not like the wind and rain before.

The match kicked off with Deeping taking advantage of a slight slope in the pitch, it really was to play a part in the 2 games. With Daniel in goal, the team were to benefit immensely from his kickouts, the Yaxley defence struggled all half to contend with. Although Deeping were on top from the start, the first few efforts whistled past the posts, or the keeper saved, then Lucas and Tom started really to benefit from the clearances, between them scoring 5 goals in the first half, with Tom (3) and Lucas (2), with fine finishes. Yaxley were trying to get into the game but were being controlled by Jared and Jack at the back with Oli, and Jamie (between them) holding the midfield together. It was a comfortable first half.

The second half started and as in the first, it was a bit more difficult going uphill, but Deeping were still creating lots of chances but the ball just wouldn’t go in, then Yaxley put a passing move together and scored. Deeping then raised their game and finally scored in the second half through Lucas with a cool finish. Still more chances came and went, but no further goals were scored.

Final score 1-6

Second match

In the second match, the players were played in different positions throughout, it didn’t really worktoo well, as it also involved a lot of substitutions due to the weather getting warmer. Although as in the first game Deeping had the slope advantage, didn’t really make full use of it, and it wasn’t until the last minute of the first half, when Tom took a free-kick, which he shot goal wards, everyone missed it including me (as I was attending to Kuda, who took a nasty whack to his ankle), into the back of the net, were our boys going to rue those missed chances, hitting the woodwork twice, and also some clear scoring opportunities.

The second half started and both teams were now creating equal amounts of chances , Kuda (now in goal, due to his injury) pulled off two smart saves - Gordon Banks like, to keep Deeping ahead. Then from a corner, Deeping scored, Lucas took the corner, and it went in off the keeper for an own goal. Our boys then maybe started to get tired as Yaxley (who had a completely fresh team on for this game)scored two goals to bring the scores level, and the game finished as a draw, which extended our unbeaten run to 26 games.

Final score 2-2

Player of the day - Jack, his usual composed self at the back, and very unlucky to hit the post in the second match.

14th March 2009

Deeping Rangers Clarets  (Away) - League

This was the eagerly awaited match against the Clarets, it was always going to be a game of few chances, as both teams know each other so well, it was just going to be a case of who took the chances when they came.

The game started with the Blues having the strong wind behind them in the first half, and seemed to be making a slight difference between the two teams,  the Blues were linking up really well from the start, with Jared, Tom and Lucas all supporting each other really well, and Jack being his usual composed self. There hadn’t been too many chances in the first few minutes, until  the Blues, got a throw in from the left, quickly taken by Jared down the line for Tom, who quickly turned and lost his marker, (something we had worked on in training only this week!) and fed a beautiful pass into Lucas’s path, he still had a lot of work to do, as the ball was bobbling on the firm surface, but from just inside the area, Lucas fired into the net with such power that I don’t think any goalkeeper at this age group would have saved. The Clarets only real effort on goal in the first half came when Jack Martin fired in a typical shot from outside of the area, which Oliver saved comfortably. A few half chances came and went for the Blues, who had been on top for most of the half. The work rate from the Blues in that first half was immense, could  they keep the up in the second half ?

The second half started with Daniel, Kuda and Adam replacing Tom, Lucas and Jared, this time  the Blues were playing into the wind, and it was clear from a few minutes into this half how strong it was. As in the first half few early chances for either team, then Daniel was tackled on the left hand side (the ball clearly going at least 3 feet over the line for a Blues throw-in, as confirmed by the parents on that side), the referee allowed play to continue, Vance running forward playing a nice pass into Cairan who scored low to Oliver’s left. Was either team going to get a winner?

The ball seemed to be spending a good deal of time in midfield, then a clearance over the top from Jack found Adam in space, and he lobbed the ball over Ben in the Clarets goal, it seemed to take ages for the ball to go in the net, but a fine finish. Adam then fired another low shot, which Ben saved at his near post

With just a minute remaining, the Clarets, almost equalised, a mix up with a goal kick, allowed Cairan to rob Kuda, and the shot was blocked by Daniel, the ball going out for a corner, from the resulting corner, the ball just couldn’t get cleared, and the Clarets just couldn’t connect cleanly enough, for an effort on goal (I think the shrieks coming from the Clarets mum’s where trying to force it in) before Jack ran the ball out of defence, as the final whistle went. This half was more difficult for  the Blues, but they defended well, and got strong tackles in when they mattered.

Final Score 1-2

Second match Peterborough City  (Home) - Friendly

The second match was against a team we had never played before, they were quite a tall team, as in the first game Deeping were playing with the wind behind them, and made it count with good, fast attacking football, and a number of half chances being created, with both Daniel and Lucas going close, then the breakthrough a fine pass through the middle by Oliver allowing Lucas to run through and calmly slot the ball past the keeper. Peterborough were not really offering too much, relying on some long throw ins for the players to run onto, but Jack and Jared were dealing with them comfortably.

The second half saw Daniel replace Tom in goal, and it was similar to the first half Deeping were comfortably on top, and the second goal would soon come, a lovely pass over the top from Jack for Lucas who scored his third goal of the day (10 in the last 3 weeks). Kuda then went on a mazy run, and passed inside for Tom to stab the ball past the oncoming keeper. With just a couple of minutes remaining Peterborough scored with a fine finish low to Daniels left.

Final score 3-1

Player of the day - Tom (a really well deserved award, for his unselfish team play, and capped with a fine goal in the second game)

With these two results, it meant that Deeping Rangers Blues have gone 22 games since their last defeat (21 wins and 1 draw).

7th March 2009

Spalding (Away) - League

First Match

On arriving at Spalding’s ground, the first thing we noticed, was how poor the pitch was, holes, very uneven, and very wide (this same pitch was later used for an U10’s 7 a-side game, and our boys were playing 5 a-side). The game kicked off and it was clear from the start that we were going to make full use of our substitutes throughout the 2 games. In the build up to the game, we told our boys that Spalding were a good team, and we couldn’t allow them to dominate possession, like they did the first time the teams met. Deeping were straight on the attack, and a great move ended up with Adam putting his shot wide of the post, minutes later a great break from Adam, running from the half-way line, getting great power in his shot, but straight at the Spalding keeper, our boys were on top, and didn’t give the home team a chance in the first half, but because of the conditions, we had to keep rotating our players, the half ended goal-less.

The second half started, and Blackstones started to get into the game, but Jack was outstanding in defence, then a break down the right, and shot from a Blackstone player, which Oliver couldn’t keep out meant that the home team had taken the lead, with their only real effort on goal. This setback galvanised our boys into a really good second half performance, which they dominated, Daniel and Lucas were causing the Spalding defence all sorts of problems, and a run from Daniel, he just delayed his shot too long, allowing the defender to block . Then a great passing move between Daniel and Lucas, found Lucas in space on the right, a beautifully weighted cross into the box, for Daniel to volley in the equaliser - fully deserved, was there time for a winner? With time running out and the whole team, really working hard for the winner, Deeping got a corner on the left, taken by Lucas, a GOAL, straight from the corner, it was the last kick off the game, but a deserved winner, as our boys really took the game to our opponents, in really difficult conditions.

Final score 1-2

Second match – Friendley

The second game was played a six a side, and again as in the first game, the team was constantly having to be changed around. As in the first game a lot of the play was in the middle of the pitch, so there were few chances for either team in the first half - a couple of half-chances fell to the Spalding players, but were dealt with comfortably by Jack and Jared in defence with timely tackles. Then a lovely team goal, which started with Daniel (in goal), out to Jack, who sent a lovely pass down the right to Oliver, who passed inside for Lucas to score. Just before halftime, Spalding created a chance, but a strong tackle and run out of the area from Oliver cleared the danger.

Second half started, and Deeping were in control, defensively today, our boys have been very good, strong in the tackle, and accurate passes out of defence. Then against the run of play, Spalding gained a corner, and scored, with a low shot that went in off the post. As in the first game, this got our boys going again, and they dominated the rest of the half, with Kuda, going on one of his mazy runs to score a trademark goal, he then did a similar run minutes later, but this time should really have passed, as Adam and Oliver were in great positions. With a minute to go, Spalding had a chance, well saved by Daniel, and Jack tidied up, and the then final whistle went.

Unlike last week when, our boys were ruthless in attack, this time defensively they were superb, with everyone playing their part, restricting a good Spalding team to few chances.

Final score 1-2

Player of the day – Jared. great tackling, awareness, and always available in space.

28th February 2009

Blackstones – (Home) League

The boys were playing their first competitive match for over a month, and were really looking forward to it. The playing surface was ideal, for our passing game, as the pitch had firmed up nicely considering the weather of the previous weeks. The matches were against a team that had given us a real test when the teams met previously, so our boys were aware from the start. From the kick off the boys seemed really determined to put on a good performance, with Kuda, Daniel and Adam linking up well from the start. After just 2 minutes, Deeping went a goal up, through a nice move involving all 3 front players, with Adam passing through to Daniel to score. Blackstones then started to get into the game, forcing a good save from Oliver. Then a lovely move down the left, found Daniel in space, and as the goalkeeper came out, Daniel saw Kuda in space in the middle, crossed for Kuda to tap into an empty net. Blackstones were still trying to push forward, and another shot from their striker hitting the post, but straight from the goal-kick, Jack put a lovely pass into the path of Kuda, for one of his trademark mazy runs into the area to calmly slot pass the keeper.

The second half started, with Lucas, Tom, and Jared, replacing Jack, Adam and Kuda, and Daniel going into defence for the first time this season (a position he had wanted to play for a few weeks). Straight from the start Deeping were on top, and were to score a further 5 goals, but it was the manner in which the goals were scored which pleased everyone, great passing, movement, composure and power. Lucas,Tom and Jared were combining superbly up front, and two fine strikes from Lucas, each giving the Blackstones keeper no chance. Tom the followed up with two goals both taken really well from tight angles on the left hand side. Lucas completed the scoring with a cross-cum shot, but also in this half our boys hit the woodwork 3 times, so it could have been even more.

Final score 8-0

Second match - friendly

The second game kicked off, and again like the first, Deeping were on top from the start, quick into the tackle, good passing, and good movement, as in the first game an early goal from Oliver set the tone for the game, further goals from Lucas, and an absolute stunner from Jack, picking up on a Blackstones clearance, moving just inside the Blackstones half, and connecting superbly, the shot went as straight as an arrow, over the keepers head, into the back of the net. Blackstones did strike the bar, when our defence was caught out from a quick corner, but that was the only scare of the half.  The second half started, and the boys were determined to add to their tally, and this they did as the boys from Blackstones started to really get deflated, further goals from Lucas, Oliver (3) took the score to 7 for the match, but the highlight of the second half was a fantastic goal line clearance from Jared just as the striker was about to score. With just a minute to go, Daniel pushed the ball round the post for his only save of the match.

These two games were real team performances, and every single payer was outstanding.

Final score 7-0

Player of the day – Lucas (5 great goals )

31st January 2009

Wittering Harriers - League

The match started on a frosty but playable pitch, the early morning sunshine helping to thaw the pitch out, but by the end of the second game, the playing surface was to become very sticky, so a lot of credit must go to the boys in putting on a really good display.

We had played Wittering earlier in the season, and judging by some recent results they had improved since then, so after a cautious first few minutes, they boys started to get their passing game together with Tom, Lucas and Jared creating some early half-chances, then a lovely run and cool finish from Lucas got the scoring going, but even better was to follow for the second goal, a move that stated with Jack at the back, involved Tom, and Jared before Lucas rifled into the top corner for his second of the game. Oliver then added a third before halftime. Wittering broke free a couple of times but both shots went wide of the post.

The second half started with really more of the same, it was all one-way traffic, and wasn't long before Kuda added a typical Kuda goal, a mazy run and finish, low into the corner, more chances came and went, Kuda setting up Oli whose shot scraped the outside of the post. Any chance Wittering had of getting anything out of the game, was being dealt with comfortably by Jack in defence. Still Deeping pressed for more goals, Adam and Oli both coming close, but the final whistle went.

Both myself and John felt this was one of the best team performances of the season

Final score 4-0

Second match - friendly

The second match started with Adam and Daniel up front, and Lucas and Tom in defence (these 4 were to swap round in the second half), and as in the first game, it was Deeping totally on top, creating early chances, and it wasn't long before Deeping scored with a lovely finish from Adam, closely followed by a goal from Daniel, and a run down the right from defence by Lucas before finishing low into the net. Deeping were awarded a penalty for handball, Jared took the penalty which was saved by the keeper, and Daniel put the rebound wide of the post (I would have put my mortgage on Daniel scoring), the half finished with Oliver in goal not touching the ball in the entire half.

The second half started, and it really was one way traffic, 7 goals were scored, the goalscorers being Jared (2), Kuda (3), Oli (1), and an absolute stunner from Adam blasting home from outside of the area following a corner - apologies for not being able to remember all of the moves that led up to the goals, but I was trying to referee the half, and seemed to spend most of my time re-starting the game after each goal.

Final score 10-0

Player of the day - Adam, 2 great goals, and a really good all round performance.

17th January 2009

 Bourne Juniors (away) - League

Following the sub-zero temperatures of the previous week, this felt as though summer had arrived early, the sun was shinning, but due to the recent rain the pitch was really heavy, this was going to test the stamina of the boys, a test they were to come through with flying colours. Before the game, a minutes silence was held, and the boys represented Deeping Rangers impeccably

The game started and immediately Deeping were on the attack, with some great passing moves between Lucas, Tom and Oliver, a shot from Lucas testing the home goalkeeper, from the clearance Lucas was onto the ball like a flash, and set up Tom for the opening goal, with a crisp finish into the bottom corner. I wasn't long before it was 2-0, another fine move involving Tom and Lucas with Lucas firing into the net. On a rare occasion that Bourne got near the Deeping goal, Daniel came off his line quickly to clear with his feet, it was the only real scare of the half. Just before half-time Oliver wrapped up a great first half performance with another goal, following up from midfield to finish well, and continue his great recent scoring run.

The second half started, and Deeping were totally in control, conserving energy but breaking quickly when the opportunity arose, particulary Kuda (even though he was meant to be in defence!!). Bourne started to create a couple of chances, and scored from a breakaway which left Adam slightly exposed two against one, and the Bourne player finished the move low to Daniels right. This signalled Deeping to raise their game once more and create the goal of the game, Tom running from deep, dummying the Bourne defender, before unleashing a great shot into the back of the net giving the goalkeeper no chance, with the last kick of the game, Daniel made one last save.

Final score 1-4

Second match - friendly

The second match kicked off, and this time the front players were Daniel and Adam, and they continued in the same vein as Tom and Lucas in the first game, on numerous occasions playing through the Bourne defense with some lovely passing moves. As in the first game it wasn't to prove too long for the first goal to go in, a lovely finish from Adam, shortly afterwards it was 2-0, when Adam shot and was followed up by Daniel. Bourne didn't trouble Oliver in goal once during the half, so he was replaced at half time by Kuda, (at least now he can say he has really been in goal). The second half started in exactly the same fashion as the first with Deeping on top, and it wasn't long before more goals were scored, Jack firing in from close range. Daniel then added a forth following a great shot by Lucas, which the goal pushed out for Daniel to volley in from close range. Kuda then saving well low down to his left from Bournes only real shot on goal.

Final score 0-4

Player of the day - Tom, a fine all round performance ,and great goal in the first game

10th January 2009

Crowland Juniors (Home) - League

These games should have been played at home, but due to a frozen pitch the match was played at Crowland's ground

On a bitterly cold day, but on a playable pitch, albeit on very long grass which really wouldn't help our lads with their passing game. The game started with Deeping mounting the first attack, good link up play between Lucas and Tom, but the Crowland keeper saving comfortably. Then Crowland started to gain the upper hand with a large amount of possession, then slightly against the run of play Deeping scored, a fine run and cross from Lucas to Tom, and Tom finishing well giving the keeper no real chance. Crowland then dominated the rest of the half breaking quickly through our defence, but Oliver was in outstanding form in goal, and prevented on more than one occasion an equaliser, the closest that Crowland came to an equaliser was when the ball hit the inside of our post and rolled along the goaline before Oliver grabbed the ball just as the Crowland player was about to tap in.

The second half started and this was real end to end, both teams creating good chances, but unable to take them. Then the move of the match, Adam robbed a Crowland player on the edge of our area, ran down the right hand side, passed the ball to Tom, who continued down the right before sending a lovely ball across for Daniel to fire over the keepers head into the goal. There were only a few minutes remaining when Crowland scored, a fine finish into the bottom corner, giving Oliver, no real chance. As Crowland pushed for an equaliser Oli pulled off the save of the match tipping a shot onto the post and out for a corner, both teams had further chances to score, but the final whistle went, with Deeping holding out for the win.

Final score 2-1

Second match - friendly

The game was played as 6 a side which saw Oli take up his position in midfield and Daniel in goal, it was still bitterly cold, but the boys got on with the game and as in the first meeting earlier in the season, dominated the game and scored many goals. It wasn't really a contest, Deeping 2-0 up before halftime with goals from Oli and Lucas, Kuda almost scoring with another of his mazy runs, Daniel in goal only touching the ball twice. Second half was even more dominant, goals from Jack, Oli, Lucas and a stunning goal from Kuda, after taking on at least 4 Crowland players and firing into the net. Daniel came out of goal for the last few minutes to be replaced by Kuda, (the first time Kuda had gone in goal - he didn't touch the ball though, so not sure if it really counts !!!!), still time for a few more efforts on goal, but no more additions to the scoreline.

Final score 6-0

Player of the Day - Oliver, outstanding in goal, and 2 goals in the second game

13th December 2008

Yaxley (Home) - Friendly

This week the boys were playing their last two matches before Christmas - against Yaxley. The games almost didn't go ahead due to the really poor weather conditions, really cold and wet. However once the games got the go-ahead, all our boys to their immense credit and the boys from Yaxley wanted to do was play football. As these 2 games were friendlies, both matches were 6 a side. The first game kicked off with Deeping kicking into a really strong wind, but it didn't take long for our boys to put some great passing moves together on a difficult playing surface. Then a great run and pass from Tom to Daniel on the left, Daniel sending over a lovely cross for Jack to finish superbly. Yaxley then started to get into the game with the wind behind them forcing Deeping to defend, an equaliser looked to be on the cards, then a Yaxley player put a crisp shot into the bottom corner of the net, to bring the scores level at halftime. The second half started and our boys were now playing with the wind behind them and started to dominate the game, it was only a matter of time before Deeping scored, then a great passing move between Daniel and Lucas, ending with Lucas racing into the box to finish from close range. Our boys were playing some lovely football, just missing out on further goals on a number of occasions.. With a minute remaining Oliver made a great save to deny Yaxley an equaliser.

Final score 2-1

Second match - Friendly

The second match started as the first with Deeping playing into the wind and the conditions were starting to deteriorate, but this didn't stop our boys from playing some fantastic football. After just 2 minutes Adam scored following another lovely passing move involving Tom, Kuda and Oliver. A few minutes later against the run of play Yaxley equalised with a deflected shot that Daniel couldn't do anything about. This spured our boys on, and a great run from Jared almost bought a second goal, the ball ending up in the goalkeepers arms, from the kick out from the keeper, it went straight to Oliver, who took the ball on a few paces, before calmly slotting the ball into the net. With 2 minutes of the match remaining Lucas found space on the right hand side, saw a gap at the near post and fired into the goal. It was the last real action of the game, as the match was then abandoned at halftime, due to the weather getting progressively worse.

Although the conditions today were really poor, our boys played some fantastic football, great passing moves and lovely team goals to finish the year in style.

Final score 3-1 (abandoned at half-time)

Player of the day - Lucas

29th November

Rippingale Rovers (Home) - League

This week Deeping Blues were up against Rippingale Rovers, the return fixture from our first game of the season. The boys were really up for this game right from the start, first to every ball, quick in the tackle, and putting together some excellent passing moves, particularly up front with Lucas, Adam and Daniel all combining well on numerous occasions. As the half progressed Deeping started turning their domination into some great chances, Lucas hitting the crossbar with a great cross-cum shot, Daniel then turning a snap shot onto the post, was the opening goal going to come or was it going to be one of those days!!

Still Deeping pressed, and Daniel had a great shot which the keeper saved with the ball hitting his face and going out for a corner, from the resulting corner Deeping scored, a great corner taken by Lucas evaded all the players near the goal and Adam was at the back post to fire into the back of the net, finally the deadlock was broken, still Deeping attacked and hit the side netting twice before the half came to a close, one -nil but on another day it could have been at least three or four before the break.

Second half started and again it was just attack after attack, but the ball just didn't want to go in the back of the net, again the post was hit, shots going just wide of the post, were our boys going to rue those missed chances. With 5 minutes left of the match, completely against the run of play, Rippingale broke free, when our boys lost possession in middle of the pitch, as their player closed in on goal, Oliver came off his line brilliantly to make the Rippingale player put his shot just wide of the post, the only scare but it could have proved so costly. For the rest of the match Deeping were creating some great chances, but the second goal just wouldn't come. Final whistle went, the boys had played some fantastic football, had they kept their scoring boots for the second game?

Final score 1-0

Second match - Friendly

The second game was played as 6 a side, the boys seem to be really enjoying this as it is the third time they have played it and are just getting better and better. This game started just like the first, with our boys playing some fantastic football, and creating chances, but as in the first game the ball just didn't want to go in the net. Just before half time Kuda took a corner on the right, and the ball went into the net off a Rippingale player, tough on the player, but just what Deeping deserved. Second half started and the boys were determined to get some more goals, a fine strike by Lucas, (a really deserved goal) followed by a goal for Kuda, three - nil, and the boys wanted more, Jack then went up front and immediately he got on the score sheet, then an inspired substitution by John bringing on Jared, and straight away he fired one into the back of the net with his right-foot. The best goal was saved till last, Kuda picking the ball up on the half way line, going past the entire Rippingale team before calmly slotting the ball into the net (for those of you old enough to remember Maradona's goal against England - no not the 'hand of god' goal - the other one, it was even better than that). The final whistle went and the scoreline fully justified the performance.

Final score 6-0

Player of the day - Kuda (aka Maradona)

22nd November

Spalding Athletic (Home) - League

This week the boys were up against Spalding Athletic, again another team we hadn't played before. The matches were played in freezing conditions, the game kicked off, and for the first few minutes, it seemed that the cold was affecting our boys more than the opposition; we couldn't get the ball out of our half. Spalding created a couple of half chances, which Oliver dealt with comfortably. Slowly the boys started to get into the game, and Lucas hit a great shot low to the keepers left, the keeper got a hand to it and pushed it onto the post, a great save. Minutes later Daniel was through, and looked up to see Lucas in space, but unfortunately, the pass was blocked for a corner, maybe on this occasion Daniel should have shot. The halftime whistle went with Deeping probably just on top.

Second half started and this time the boys got back into their usual attacking style and within the first few minutes scored. The ball was played in from a great corner from Tom, which fell lovely for Daniel to half-volley into the net. For the next few minutes Deeping were controlling the match, but then allowed Spalding to equalise with a goal similar to the one we conceded against Glinton a couple of weeks before, confusion in the Deeping defence, and no-one making a positive clearance allowed the ball to fall nicely for the Spalding player to tap in from a couple of yards out. Which way was the game going to go? Then with the last attack of the game Daniel shot which was well saved by the goalkeeper. The game ending in a draw, probably a fair reflection on the game.

Final score 1 - 1

Second match - Friendly

For the second week running, the match was played as a 6-aside game, which enabled us to play Oliver in that central midfield role, a role which he played so well the week before. The match started and this time unlike the first match Deeping started the more brightly, with Tom and Lucas combining brilliantly to set up Lucas for a fine goal, low to the keepers right. Spalding then equalised, after Daniel had saved their first shot, but it fell nicely for a Spalding player to follow up. Almost immediately Deeping went into the lead again, this time from Oliver with a late run into the area (similar to last week) to fire into the net. With almost the last attack of the game Spalding equalised again, when they broke clear and fired past Daniel into the net.

The second half started, again Deeping were straight onto the attack, forcing the defender to block Toms shot for a corner. Tom sent in a great corner, which caused panic in the Spalding defence, and the ball went into the back of the net for an own goal (what a way for the boys to get their 100th goal of the season!). A few minutes later Kuda stopped a Spalding attack, and ran down the wing, sent in a low cross, or was it a shot, which crept in at the near post. (cue usual celebrations). Then 2 minutes later Spalding scored, with a low shot., the Spalding players really tried hard for the equaliser forcing Daniel into four fine stops in the last few minutes. Deeping held on for the win, but as in the first game, the boys know that they can play better, but were up against a good team.

This game will be remembered mostly for the 100th goal of the season so far being scored.

Final score 4-3

Blackstones Juniors (Away) - League

For the second week running the boys were up against a team they hadn't played before, this time it was Balackstones Juniors. A strong wind greeted both sets of players, and as Deeping were kicking into the wind in the first half, it took our boys a few minutes to get to grips with the conditions. Blackstones had obviously played in these conditions before, as they tested Oliver in goal with 2 long range shots, one flying over the bar, and the other well saved by Oli. As Deeping got to grips with the conditions, the ball was starting to be passed around well, and then a great pass from Kuda was played up to Tom on the halfway line, a brilliant turn and run toward the Blackstones goal, and a great shot into the net. Another fine save from Oli brought the half to a close. In the second half Deeping would be playing with the wind behind them, and Blackstones were finding it difficult to get the ball forward, Deeping were now totally on top, and looking for that second killer goal, the attacks started to build, but the goal wouldn't come, was it going to be one of those days when Blackstones just might get an an equaliser, but Deeping defended well when needed, Daniel in goal not having a shot to save in the half. The chances kept on coming, and finally Adam got the all important second goal, which was well deserved for his tireless running at the Blackstones defence.

Final score 0-2

Second match - Friendly

The second match started with both team playing 6 a side (in preparation for next season), it was the first time our boys had played with two defenders, one in midfield, and two attackers, well what can I say, it was an outstanding performance. Again as in the first match Deeping were kicking into the wind, but this was so different to the first game, straight away Deeping were on top, and within minutes had gone a goal up, with a lovely finish from Kuda, clipping the ball over the keeper (cue usual celebration), the second goal was scored by Oli, supporting from midfield and finishing really well. The football being played was superb, Tom then scored number three, with a low shot in the far corner, and Oli then found the net again with a lovely finish, after running in from deep, a fantastic performance considering the conditions. The question was how many would Deeping score in the second half, with the wind behind them?

The second half started with Deeping controlling the game, not allowing Blackstones a second on the ball with Jack, Jared, Oli and Kuda (various substitutions through the half) all putting in great tackles, allowing Lucas and Daniel to get forward, Lucas was putting in some fine crosses , Kuda and Oli making great runs from deep. I don't think anyone will understand how we didn't score any goals in ths half, it was one-way traffic the whole time, the Blackstones keeper was outstanding, although I don't think he knew too much about some of the saves he was making. Right up to the final whistle chance after chance came and went, and in the last minute, the ball was pinging around their goal, but it wouldn't go in. The performance in my mind was our best of the season against a team that had only lost one match previously.

Final score 0-4

Thurlby Tigers (Home) - League

The boys took on the team from Thurlby, a team we hadn't played before, on a very sticky pitch, and strong wind. The boys were really up for this game following the disappointment of the previous weekend, and it showed, straight from the start, the boys were on top. After just a couple of minutes Tom found the net with a crisp finish into the bottom corner, this set the tone for the rest of the half with attack, after attack, shot after shot, it was only a matter of time before further goals followed, with clinical strikes from Lucas and Daniel, 3-0 at half-time really didn't tell the full story as Deeping created at least a dozen good scoring chances.

In the second half Thurlby came out strongly and created a few chances, all dealt with comfortably by Oliver, then Kuda and Daniel scored, with fine strikes, Kuda's goal coming from a really good passing move which involved all of the boys. Thurlby then got two quick goals, one from a corner, and one that fell lucky for the striker, after they had charged down Jack's clearance. Daniel then wrapped things up with two further goals, the last one following a run from the half-way line. A really strong performance for the boys, and on another day could have had many more goals.

Final score 7-2

Second match - Friendly

The second match started with the same tempo as the first, however this half the boys were not really creating too many clear chances, but still the ball was played mainly in the Thurlby half, a couple of half chances came and went, until a well worked goal between Adam and Kuda, set up Kuda for the goal, it was the only goal of the first half. The second half started with Lucas playing up front and immediately his pace started to cause problems for the Thurlby defence, a great run and shot which hit the post, and then the chances started to come, but we were just lacking that bit of luck in front of goal. The Thurlby keeper then saved a further two efforts from Lucas, before Jared went on a great run down the left before calmly slotting the ball in, to the great delight of his grandparents who were watching the boys for the first time. The third and final goal came from Oliver who like all of the other goals today finished very calmly. The pleasing thing today from the coaches point of view was that the boys had scored all 10 goals in the Thurlby penalty area, something we had worked on in training.

Final score 3-0

Glinton (away) Friendly - Summary of matches

Our mini friendly trio of matches stated against our biggest rivals Glinton A, the side we always seemed to come up against last year at the Embankment, and Glinton must have thought Christmas had come early ,as we gifted them 3 of their 5 goals, maybe our boys were suffering from a Halloween hang-over!

Glinton went 2 goals up in the first half against the run of play, but in the second half our boys heads seemed to drop, and we lost concentration, and Glinton took control, scoring a further 3 goals. It was the first time this season that the boys seemed to forget everything they had done so well in previous weeks e.g passing, tackling and being a team, but I don't think they will come up against a team of Glinton quality too many times, the score-line flattered Glinton , but the boys and the coaches will learn from this defeat. Final score 5-0

The second game was against the Clarets, and it seemed that the boys still were not totally focused, maybe still thinking about the previous game, the Clarets went a goal up , with a stunning shot from Jack M, Daniel equalised, with an equally good goal, but again as in the first match, the boys lost concentration, and allowed the Clarets, to score 2 further goals, this seemed to wake our boys up, and they got back into the game with a penalty, slotted home by Adam, in the last few minutes, had a couple of chances to equalise, but it wouldn't come. Final score 3-2

The third game was against Glinton B, this was a game the boys were determined to win, and all of a sudden, stated playing as a team, concentrating, passing and doing everything right. From the start totally dominating play, and deservedly going a goal up, with a great free-kick from Jared, minutes later, another goal, this a tap-in from Daniel, it could have been even more convincing, but the Glinton keeper made great save to keep out Oliver's penalty, Jack was totally in control at the back. The second half was totally played in the Glinton half, and how our boys didn't score further goals was just amazing, Tom was firing shot after shot at the Glinton goal, and each one whistled inches past the posts, Lucas was terrorising them on the wing with his pace, and Jared was halting everything they tried to put together, it was a totally dominating performance and the boys finished their trio of matches with a really good performance. Final score 0-2

Hampton FC (Home) Friendly

On a bright but very chilly morning, the boys took on the team from Hampton, this was always going to be a real test for the boys as Hampton have also started the season well. The game kicked off and Hampton lined up with a formation that our boys hadn't faced before, with 2 defenders and 2 forwards, this meant that Deeping had the bulk of the play but were finding it difficult to break Hampton down. The first real attack came from Hampton as Harry (ex Deeping player) broke clear, but pulled his shot wide. That scare spurred Deeping into life and a fine interchange of play between Daniel and Kuda put Kuda clear, and only an excellent last ditch tackle prevented Kuda from getting a shot on goal. Then Hampton scored as Harry shot past Oliver. Hampton then created another opening which produced a fine save from Oliver. The second half started, and Deeping started to get control of the game, then a great pass out of defence from Jack, to Daniel on the left wing, Daniel ran forward and sent a lovely pass into Adam to score with a crisp shot into the net. Hampton then had to replace their keeper, and this was the signal for Deeping to push players forward in search of the winner, but it just wouldn't come. The game ended as a draw - a fair result. Final score 1-1

Second match - Friendly

The second game started with Tom as striker, having played the previous game as defender. Straight from the kick-off Deeping were in control, and as early as the second minute, took the lead with a fantastic cross-cum-shot from out wide on the right by Tom which flew over the keepers head. This was only the start of a fantastic first half performance by Tom, his second wasn't long in coming, a long clearance from Daniel, and Tom outsprinted the defender and shot past the keeper. The third was similar to the second, Daniel again sent a long clearance and Tom beat the defender, and put a tremendous shot over the keepers head for a fantastic hat-trick, but there was still more to come. On the stroke of halftime Tom raced forward but was tripped just outside the area, a direct free kick resulted in yet another goal, this being deflected in by a Hampton player, but it is being credited to Tom as it would have gone in, 4-0 at halftime. Another feature of this match was superb play from Oliver and Jared, who were completely dominating the midfield. The second half stated and straight away Deeping were on the attack as Lucas broke through, and just put his shot wide, but it wasn't long before Deeping scored again, as Lucas powered in a great shot which flew into the net. Then Hampton pulled a couple of goals back before the end, but the final whistle blew at the end of a fantastic performance from the home team, against very good opponent. Final score 5-2

Player of the day - Oliver (a superb save in the first game, and tireless midfield performance in the second game)

Wittering Harriers (Away) - League

Another lovely autumn sunny morning, to play against a team we had never played before. We used this match as an opportunity to try the boys in different positions, some of which they hadn't played before this season, e.g. Jared in goal, and Oliver as a defender, Lucas in an unfamiliar role as striker, every single one of them adapted to those positions extremely well. As in previous weeks, it took the boys a few minutes to get going, but as soon as Jack sent a clearance from the halfway line which arrowed towards the goal, the keeper misjudged it, to allow the ball to go past him for the first goal, there was only going to be more goals to follow, Lucas then tapped in the second, and the boys were really on top, the Wittering players were finding it difficult to create any chances as Jack was as solid as ever. A few more chances followed but the Wittering keeper was playing well, and the half came to a close. The second half started with the boys on top straight from the kick off and Tom and Daniel tearing the home defence apart with strong running and passing, further goals followed from both Tom (2) and Daniel (2) a couple of these were scored when the goalkeeper saved the first shots but was unable to save the follow up, something we had spoken about in training, so was pleasing to see reactions from the boys. The only real threat to the Deeping goal was when a free-kick was conceded in the area, after Jared had handled the ball from a back pass, the Wittering player scored, but the goal was disallowed by the referee, as the free-kick was indirect (a little harsh!). The game ended, as it had been throughout with Deeping on top. Final score 0-6

Second match - Friendly

Again we used this match like the first to try the boys in some new positions, Jack as striker, Kuda on the left, and Tom in defence, as the previous game, they all played these positions extremely well, with Tom outstanding at the back, it wasn't long before the boys were attacking the Wittering goal, and it was only a matter of time before the goals started to go in. Before the break goals by Jack, Kuda and Lucas, made the score-line 3-0 at halftime, it should have been more, with chances going wide of the post, the keeper playing well, and then an unbelievable piece of skill from Kuda saw him go past 3 defenders, and just as he was about to score, the ball bobbled and he put his effort over the bar, from only a couple of yards (or was it feet!!!).

The second half started, with Kuda in defence, but following a crunching tackle on the Wittering striker had to come off for a few minutes, Tom replaced him from the bench and Jack was in midfield, and all  were superb. When Kuda returned, he replaced Jack in midfield, and immediately set up a goal for Daniel (an inspired substitution form John - he told me to write that!!), and then more great goals followed from Jared, and Daniel (4), the pick of Daniels four goals , came from a long throw by Tom, which Daniel clipped over the goalkeeper, the match finishing as in the first game with Deeping on top. Final score 0-8

Player of the day - Tom (a fantastic performance as both striker and particularly in defence)

11th October 2008

Deeping Rangers Clarets (Home) - League

The match everyone had been waiting for, between the Blues and the Clarets. It was a lovely warm day the woolly hats of last week were replaced, by sunglasses and T-shirts. Both teams started brightly, with the blues springing a surprise by starting Daniel on the pitch and Oliver in goal. The blues were having the bulk of the possession, without really creating a clear chance, then a break away by the clarets forced a great save from Oliver. The game continued to be played mainly in midfield, with the blues still on top, and then just before half-time for the 3rd match running the blues conceded a goal, this from a throw in which uncharacteristically was thrown back towards our goal, Jack was put under pressure by 2 clarets players, which resulted in a crisp low shot into the goal by Max.

The second half started, with real pressure being forced towards the clarets goal, and gradually the blues started to control the play, with some great running, passing and tackling by the whole team, and as the attacks started to build, Daniel then won a 50/50 tackle with Jack Martin and sent in a lovely pass to Adam, who fired in a great shot, which was too powerful for Ben to save, a fully deserved equaliser, now the blues were totally on top, and the winner was only minutes away. A goal kick from the clarets goalkeeper Ben was collected by Lucas, who raced towards goal, as Ben came out to try and collect the ball his momentum carried him outside his area, and he handled the ball, a direct free kick for the blues - was this the moment?

A great free kick from Adam who rifled in a shot goalbound, the ball was headed off the line by Harrison, but only up in the air, as the ball came down, Daniel rose 'like a salmon' and headed in the winner (our first headed goal of the season), the blues parents cheered so loudly, the whole of Deeping would have heard them. Only minutes remained, and as the clarets pushed forward for the equaliser, Jared was strong in defence, and the final whistle blew, for a famous victory. Final score 2-1

Second match - Friendly

The match started in similar fashion to the first with the blues controlling the play, and then Tom struck a fierce shot which rattled the bar, moments later a lovely individual goal form Kuda (usual celebration followed), for the blues to go a goal up. Again as in the first game, the blues conceded a goal from a throw in which wasn't cleared properly, and the ball eventually finding its way through to Cairen, who fired past Daniel for the equaliser.

The second half saw few chances for either team, but in the dying minutes, a great pass over the defence by Adam put Tom through for a shot on goal, which whistled past the post. The Clarets finding Tom a real threat to their goal all morning, Final Score 1-1

On a very warm morning, two matches played in a great spirit, by two really good teams.

Player of the Day - Jack

Special mentions, Oliver - Great save in the first match, Jack – Great positional play, and well deserved player of the day, Jared - Excellent in defence, and left midfield, with some great tackling and awareness, Kuda - Tigerish tackling, and didn't let Mason out of his sight, and a lovely goal in the second match, Lucas - Non stop running and awareness, in both attack and defence, Daniel - Set up the equaliser, and scored the winner, Adam - Great equalising goal, and set up the winner for Daniel, Tom - Tireless effort throughout,  a great shot that hit the bar, and almost scored the winner in second match

Bourne (Home) - League

After the sunshine of the first few weeks, the woolly hats were out in force, as the first game started with a bitterly cold wind, however the boys started very brightly and created some good early chances, the Bourne goalkeeper keeping them in the game, with a number of fine saves, particularly from Adam,Kuda and Oliver. Then Deeping took the lead with a fantastic shot from Tom, following a well worked corner (the first time this season we had scored from a set-piece), Jared then almost scored, but the shot went the wrong side of the post. Deeping continued to dominate the first half, then just like last week against Crowland, Bourne equalised right on half time, the goal coming from a mix up as Deeping took a corner, unfortunately all of the boys has gone too far forward, leaving Daniel exposed at the back, then an unfortunate error from Daniel allowed Bourne to score with their only effort on goal in the first half. The second half was again a story of missed chances, too many times the boys were not composed enough in front of goal. The game ended with Deeping on top pushing for the winner but it just wouldn't come. Final Score 1-1

Second match - Friendly

The second match was also like last week, Deeping totally dominating from start to finish. The scoring started with the second attack of the game, with a lovely cool finish from Tom, which opened the floodgates, Daniel then helped himself to a first half hat-trick, with the pick of the goals being the first one, sidefooting in from a great run and cross by Tom. Bourne’s only real effort in the first half was well saved by Oliver just before half-time..

Second half carried on the same way as the first, with Deeping tearing the Bourne defence apart with their pace particularly from Lucas, Daniel scored a further 3 goals in the game, the pick of his goals was when he was one on one with the keeper and cooly sidestepped his way past before scoring. There was still time for one more goal, this being a lovely finish from Jack. The goal came from a corner (the second goal from a set-piece!!!!), and Jack took a touch before finishing into the bottom far corner. The chances were coming right up to the final whistle with Lucas, Jared both going close. Final score 8-0

Player of the day - Daniel

27th September 2008

Crowland Juniors Away - League

In the first match, Deeping started as brightly as the autumn sunshine after the fog had lifted, straight on the attack with a lovely passing move which resulted in Tom seeing Adam in space, and Adam slotted into the bottom corner. Another attack soon followed, and Tom struck a fierce shot against the post. Crowland then created a nice move, which brought a fantastic diving save from Daniel low to his left.  Then totally against the run of play Crowland equalised right on half time, when Jack was left with two to defend against, Daniel saved the first shot, but couldn't save the follow-up. Second half was again one way traffic, and Deeping were awarded a penalty for handball, Tom putting the penalty away. A few minutes later another penalty, for a foul, unfortunately, this time Toms shot went wide. Tom had yet another shot hit the post, and the game ended as it had started with Deeping totally in control. Final Score 1-2.

Second match

What can I say to describe the second match, "it was like watching Brazil", 2 goals up with the first two attacks through Kuda and Lucas, then the "pass of the season" from Jack to set Lucas up for his second, Kuda wrapping up a great first half with his second of the match, brilliantly set up by Jared, who beat 3 players before passing inside for Kuda to score. The second half started with Lucas replacing Daniel in goal, and the attacks on the Crowland goal just continued, with Jared and Daniel tearing the home team apart, Jared set up Daniel for 3 goals and Kuda for one, the pick of the goals was a shot into the top corner for Daniels hat-trick (Daniel having 4 shots and scoring 4 goals - better than Ole Soljskear against Notts Forest) all through the game Kuda was at the heels of the Crowland players like a little terrier. The performance of the season so far. Final score 0-8

Player of the day (it could have been anyone of the team) – Kuda

20th September 2008

Eye United – Friendly (Home)

Another bright and sunny morning with a friendly against one of the teams we played on a number of occasions at the embankment last season, this proved to a far better test that the two previous weeks matches.

First half started with Deeping going a goal up, with a cool finish by Tom, and almost doubling the lead minutes later, but for a good save by the Eye keeper, we also hit the woodwork, then the opposition started to get back into the game and equalised, the ball just crossing the line before Jared could get to it, Daniel then had to be on his toes to keep out 3 efforts. In the second half, Eye caught us out straight from the kick off and scored with their first attack of the half (a lesson to be learnt), we tried for the equaliser, but it wouldn’t come, with both Jack and Daniel having late efforts from a corner in the last minute. Final Score 1-2

Second match started, and we were on top from the start, with Daniel and Adam both scoring in the first half, and both hitting the woodwork, as the second half carried on in the same vein as the first with further goals from Daniel, a great solo effort from Kuda (usual celebration followed), and a tap in from Oliver at the end. The only real scare for our goal was cleared with a fantastic last ditch tackle from Jared. The game was completely controlled by Jack in defence and Lucas in midfield, and some lovely goals. Final Score 5-0

Player of the day - Jared

13th September 2008
Rippingale Rovers Away - League

The football was as bright as the afternoon sun for Deeping Rangers Blues as the boys played some exceptional football to record a convincing win over Rippingale Rovers in their opening league fixture of the 08-09 campaign.

Lead by Lucas (captain for the day) Rangers took to a slightly bumpy and overgrown surface at Rippingale.  Lucas opened the scoring with an audacious effort from the left early in the half.  Despite peppering the home goal the score was kept to 1-0 at the break with Daniel pulling off a great save at the end of the half.
The second half was another keenly contest affair with Rippingale keeper having an outstanding game in the shot stopping department.  An own goal doubled the advantage before Kuda added a well taken effort (again cue acrobatic celebration) and finally Tom came back on to take advantage of a tiring defence. Final score 0-4

The second game saw us swap Daniel for Tom in goal.  Immediately Deeping put together the move of the match with all our lads being involved, the ball going from one wing to the other before Adam finally finished with a flourish.  This set the tone for the game with Jared bringing the ball forward for Adam and Lucas and Daniel to provide devastating striking.  Adam netted four times in half.  The second half went much the same way as the first with Daniel hitting four and Oliver cropping up with two great strikes. Final score 0-12

Player of the day - Adam

First match as Deeping  Rangers Under 8’s Blues versus Thorpe Wood Rangers. – Friendly (Home) 6th September 2008

What a fantastic day, a brand new kit, the rain stayed away, and 12 goals scored, none conceded.

Where do I start, the first match as our new team, couldn’t have gone much better, 4 goals up by half-time thanks to a great hat-trick by Tom, and a classic poachers finish by Jared, and not a single save required by our goalkeeper Daniel, thanks to some great defending by Jack.

Second half started with Adam, Kuda & Lucas replacing Tom, Jared and Jack, but that didn’t stop the goals, with Kuda scoring and celebrating just like Nani, and to finish things off another goal from Jared, right at the end. Again no real shots on target, thanks to some great team play, by Oliver (our midfield general) and Adam, I am sure Daniel will face tougher opposition in the coming weeks. Final Score 6-0

Second match started, in a similar way to the first, with our strikers totally dominating the match, 2 stunning strikes by Lucas and Daniel, and for me, the goal of the day, scored by Adam, but made with a fantastic run down the right by Lucas, a further 2 goals by Adam (giving him  a great hat-trick) and another by ?????? added to the scoreline, again as in the first match, the defenders kept their attackers down to just 3 efforts on goal, all dealt with ease by Oliver. I think Jack felt a bit sorry for their team so he decided to put his penalty wide of the goal, but it all made for a very enjoyable day, and two great performances. Final Score 6-0
