Updated 25th April 2009

The 2008/09 season has just finished and what a great season it has been….in the end!

As has been the case for the last couple of years, pre-season was a difficult period culminating in a few players deciding to leave as we were about to commence our maiden Youth League campaign. Another season of rebuilding looked on the cards and when we lost our first two league games and were struggling to get 11 players on the pitch things looked decidedly shaky!

However, slowly but surely we recovered thanks to the commitment of the lads and the boost of some quality new signings. From the 3rd game we went on an 11 match winning streak beating most of the top teams in division 1 along the way. This proved to the boys that they could compete with the best and whereas we would have previously been edged out in tight games we were now the ones digging in and producing the results. The team’s achievements were rewarded in November when the Youth League named us their Team of the Month.

This excellent run included an amazing league cup campaign which saw us lift the trophy at the end of March. Nobody could say we didn’t deserve it, we were drawn against 1st division sides in every round and as in the league we had to beat the cream of the 1st division, cup holders and newly crowned league champions ICA, last seasons league champions Bourne and in the final, league runners up Eye.

With the cup win under our belts it was a case of seeing how high we could finish in the league but maybe predictably it was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show! Fixture backlog dealt us a heavy hand at the end of the season, our last 4 games had to be played in the space of 7 days. A tall order given that 3 of those games saw us playing ICA, Eye and Bourne. Having beaten each of them twice maybe a 3rd time would be pushing it a bit. So it proved, despite battling hard the previous narrow victories were now turning into narrow defeats as we lost the final 4 games 2-1.

At one point it looked like a top 3 position might be possible but in the end we finished 5th. At the start of the season maybe we’d have took that but the lads will be frustrated after all the hard work they put in but that in itself tells us how far we have progressed. But it has been a season of positives and we now look forward to the Under 16 season.

Training will continue at Outgang Road, Thursdays 7pm, until Mid May. Anyone interested in joining the team is welcome to attend these sessions for a trial, please give me a ring for more information.
