15th April 2008
Just to confirm that there will be training this Thursday (17th) from 17:00 – 18:30 on the U10 pitch at Outgang Road. This will be our first mixed session but it will be a fun session as there are a number of people on holiday this week. Please ensure your child has a waterproof jacket, boots & drink with him.
Contrary to the message on the website, there will not be any training this Saturday morning because of the number of people that are away.
My plans for the next few weeks have changed slightly as I now want to make a decision on the U11 squad before the Deeping tournament on May 5th. This is mainly because I currently have 20 players but I can only use 16 at the tournament (2 teams of 8) so it makes sense to trim the squad down before that date. (Sorry if that seems a little harsh, but the decision has to be made sometime soon and there will never be a perfect time to do it).
Therefore, please put these dates (& times) in your diaries and do your best to get your son to as many of these sessions as possible ...
Thursday 24th April – DRFC – 17:00 – 19:00
Saturday 26th April – DRFC – 12:30 – 14:30 (Please wear full DRFC kit for a team photo)
Wednesday 30th April – DRFC – 18:00 – 19:00 (possible friendly against this season’s U11 squad - TBC)
Thursday 1st May – DRFC – 17:00 – 19:00 (I will need to speak to every player & parent during/after this session to notify you of my decision so please make every effort to accompany your son on this date).
We then have our presentation evening on Saturday 3rd May which I hope you will all attend to celebrate the achievements of last season? Unfortunately, the timing means that just 2 days prior to this I will have had difficult conversations with 2 or 3 of you but I hope you will understand that any decisions I make will be purely football based and will not be personal in any way? For the record, I have enjoyed coaching and watching all of the lads over the past few years and I am not looking forward to saying goodbye to any of them.
The 16 that are selected for the U11 squad will all be expected to be available for the Deeping tournament on May 5th. We will be entering two mixed teams from the current Clarets & Blues squads so if you cannot make it on this day please let me know ASAP. This will not affect my decision on the U11 squad, but it may mean that I have spaces available for the “dropped” players to join us and put themselves in the shop window for other managers to view and approach.
I’d just like to reiterate that whoever leaves us at the end of the month will receive my full support and backing to find another local football team.
Please do not worry about the coming weeks or put any undue pressure on your lads over this. Whilst we all enjoy our football, it is only a game and should always be taken as a bit of fun and an escape from the other pressures and stresses in our lives. Whether your lad plays for Deeping or another team next season, the most important factor is that they enjoy the game. They cannot do this if they are worrying about it or having sleepless nights over it. Therefore, you may wish to withhold some or all of this information from the lads and just let them come along like they would for any other training session. I will not be discussing the importance of these dates with them during the sessions and I will not be putting any additional pressure on them.
And finally, I have arranged a friendly game against Yaxley on Saturday 31st May. Again, I’ll need all 16 U11 players available for this game so please let me know ASAP if you are not around on this date. I have also entered 2 teams in the Yaxley tournament on 8th June – more details to follow nearer the time for both of these dates.
As always, if anyone wants to discuss this with me, please pick up the phone or drop me an email – I don’t want anyone to worry about this and I certainly don’t want any of the lads unable to put 100% into their football because they are too stressed or nervous to perform.
See you all over the next few weeks.
Dave.

Saturday – we are away against Sawtry who play their games in a village called Great Gidding, which is south of Peterborough, not far from Stilton. The easiest way I can explain is to drive from Deeping to Yaxley and carry on towards the A1 instead of going into Yaxley. Don’t go onto the A1, but go over it following signs for Stilton. 200 yards onto the Stilton road, take the left turn which goes back over the A1 and is signposted Sawtry (B1043). Follow this minor road for 2 miles and then take the road to the right which goes back under the A1 (B660) and is signposted Great Gidding. Keep on this road for 4 miles until you arrive in Great Gidding. I’ve been assured that the football field is very easy to find once you’re in the village – I guess we’ll find out on Saturday! Kick off is at 10:30 so I think it would be wise to leave Deeping at 09:00 to allow for a wrong turn or 2 and give us time for a short warm up before the game. If you’re not going to be there by 10:00, please call me on my mobile.
Sunday – If you’ve got nothing better to do, please meet me at 10:30 at the junior pitch (behind the main stand) at Outgang Rd to watch the U11 squad play against Nene Valley. This will give us all a good idea of what is expected of us next season. I’ll be doing the same on Sunday 30th March so don’t worry if you can’t make it this weekend.
Saturday 29th March – Kings Cliffe have asked if we can bring our away game against them forward by a week. Please email, text me or tell me on Saturday morning if you are available. This means we would not have a league game on Saturday 5th April.
Saturday 12th April (am) – U10 Cup Final - Deeping Blues v Bourne Blues – if you can spare the time please support the Blues in the cup final at the Focus Centre in Dogsthorpe – kick off TBA.
Saturday 12th April (pm) – Race Night at DRFC for all the family – see the website for details.
Sunday 6th April – End of season BBQ @ The Deeping Caravan Park
Saturday 3rd May – U10 presentation evening @ DRFC Clubhouse
Monday 5th May – Deeping Rangers Sixes Tournament – are you available? Please let me know ASAP if you haven’t already done so.
And finally, I’ve had a very positive response to my note from a few weeks ago with several players from both the Blues & Clarets pledging their future to Deeping Rangers which is great. In fact, I haven’t had one person saying they don’t want to continue. If you are still undecided or if you want to discuss your options with me, please give me a call or grab me on a Thursday or Saturday.
Dave.
19th February 2008
Our game this weekend is away at Northborough – 10:30 kick off, so please meet at Northborough Village Hall at 09:45.
I understand there is an inter school football match/tournament happening this Thursday so can you all let me know if your lad is playing in that please?
We won’t train if the majority are playing elsewhere so I’ll need to know ASAP.
Can you all put Sunday 6th April in your diary please as we will be having an end of season BBQ for all Clarets players, parents & siblings. Belinda & Darren Young have very kindly offered us the use of their superb facilities at the Caravan Park so I hope everyone can make it to mark the end of our final season as Deeping Clarets. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of the food, but I’ll need to know how many people are coming before I can work out costs. Therefore, can you please let me know at the weekend if you can or can’t come? Can you also indicate if you have any dietary requirements please? I want to keep things as simple as possible but I’ll obviously cater for any veggies, fishies and of course the meaties. I’ll also need a helping hand or two on the day from any budding Gordon’s or Jamie’s out there who fancy flipping a burger or two – McDonalds & Burger King experience not necessary!
Fingers crossed we’ll get some warm weather (anyone remember what that feels like?).
If I don’t see you on Thursday I’ll hopefully see you on Saturday – if the game is cancelled due to a frozen pitch I’ll let you know as soon as I can.
Dave.

You’ll have noticed that a decision on the U11 squad will be made during the week after the Deeping Tournament so I need players and parents to let me know what your plans are for the future. If you are considering moving to another sport or another team please let me know as soon as you can. Please remember that our games switch to Sunday morning’s once we move to U11 and I am reliably informed that will clash with rugby which I know 2 or 3 of the lads play at the moment but that won’t be possible moving forward. So please help me out by letting me know what’s going on – I’d like to know by the end of this season on 5th April at the latest.
Unless I am told otherwise I will assume that all 10 of the Clarets want to continue playing for Deeping Rangers next season.
Please also note that the tournaments only allow me to have a squad of 8 so can you please let me know ASAP if you are or aren’t available for the 3rd May & 8th June? Priority will naturally be given to players who want to be part of our plans for the future. I will only be entering one more small-sided tournament this summer – that will be Northborough which is usually towards the end of June. Again, that will be a maximum of 8 players so I will try to rotate the lads so everyone gets to go to at least two tournaments.
That’s enough information from me for now – we’ve all got some tough decisions to make over the next 2 months but I hope that doesn’t get in the way of us enjoying the last 5 games of this season.
See you all soon – call me or drop me a line if you want to discuss anything mentioned here.
Dave.
21st January 2008
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
Just 2 very quick notices for you ....
See you all in Wittering at 09:45 on Saturday for our next league fixture – please remember to pack your lads shooting boots – we’ve only scored once since we scored 8 against Kings Cliffe on 24th November 2007!
Dave.
17th December 2007
Hi folks – this is my last posting of 2007.
Unfortunately we signed off 2007 with our 3rd defeat of the league season which makes top spot very difficult for us now as we are 12 points adrift of Parkside who remain in pole position. However we still have 2 games in hand which will half that deficit if we manage to beat Bourne who only beat Kings Cliffe 2-0 at the weekend and Sawtry who lost 2-1 to Oundle – so we still have an outside chance of getting close to the top and we are still on track for a top 3 or even 2 position.
However, we need to play like we have for the past 2 games for our remaining 9 league games – not an easy task, but one that we are more than capable of.
We showed tremendous spirit against Whittlesey and we played some lovely passing football against Parkside. Had the referee not given the penalty I am certain that we’d have had a draw at the very least on Saturday. But that’s behind us now and we must prepare for out next challenge – beating Bourne Reds at their ground on 5th January.
We are already one player down on that day, so if you know now that you will not be available on that day please let me know immediately, otherwise I’ll assume that I’ll have a squad of 8 to take with me.
Our next training session will be on Thursday 3rd January – probably indoors at the leisure centre and probably mid-afternoon for a couple of hours (4-6 if I can get it booked). Can you please let me know ASAP if this will be a problem or not?
Before I sign off, I need to offer more thanks to Dean & Elayne Baxter for organising the Bowling Party last Saturday – it was great to see all of the lads from both squads mixing well and having fun – more proof (if any was needed) that we are going to have a very strong and close squad when we move up to the 11-a-side game.
And with that change just 4 months away now, I need everyone to let me know if you haven’t already, if you or you child has plans or ambitions other than playing for Deeping Rangers next season. As you know, I need to trim the current playing numbers down from 20 to a maximum of 16 so if you’re having thoughts of moving to another team or taking up another sport on Sunday morning’s please do drop me a line or grab me when you next see me.
That’s all from me in 2007.
I hope you and your families have a fantastic Christmas and a superb New Year – see you in 2008!
Dave.
9th December 2007
I hope the frostbite is starting to wear off and that you’ve managed to get yourself dry after yesterday’s horrible weather?
I also hope that no-one had too big a hangover this morning after last night’s party.
Many thanks to Elayne Baxter for organising our festive celebration – I trust everyone had a good time?
This Thursday see’s the last training session of 2007, followed by our last league game of the year away to Parkside on Saturday morning. Kick-off is at 11:30 and they play at the Bushfield Sports Centre in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough. I’m aware that a few people will know where that is (click here for a map), but I’m guessing the majority don’t so I’m happy to meet in Deeping Rangers car park at 10:15 so we can travel in convoy. If you’re going straight there, please let me know and please get there by 11:00 at the latest. You’ll park in the shopping centre car park (don’t leave any valuables on display!), and with the centre in front of you, you need to walk to your left towards the EMAP buildings. Follow the path with office buildings on your left & right, and then turn left and walk past the sports centre entrance; turn left and you’ll see the grass sports fields in front of you. Call me on my mobile if you get lost – but I suggest that if you’re not confident that you meet us in Deeping and we’ll all get lost together. I know I’m stating the obvious, but it would be sensible to avoid going through Peterborough on Saturday as it’s likely to be chocca with Christmas shoppers.
Please also remember that it’s the lads Christmas party at AMF Bowl in Bretton on Saturday. We start bowling at 3pm so please try to get there no later than 1445 so we can get shoes and lanes sorted. They will also get a cooked meal afterwards so if you’re planning anything for later in the day we probable won’t be finished much before 5pm.
And finally, if the weather is wet & cold on Thursday we will not train. I’ll text everyone by 3pm on Thursday to let you know. If you don’t hear from me, then we’ll train as normal from 5 until 6.
See you all later in the week.
Dave.
19th November 2007
I hope everyone took advantage of the past couple of weeks lie-ins because we’ve got a busy run in towards Christmas, starting this weekend with a home game against Kings Cliffe Kites.
As some of you will be aware, I’ve been busy on my FA coaching course for the past 2 weeks and I’m back with a renewed energy for training and match days.
We’ve all had time to reflect on our poor performance against Northborough the other week – let’s just put that down to a bad day in the office and get back on track with a good performance (and result) against Kings Cliffe.
Results have actually been helpful to us while we’ve had a break with the top teams taking points off each other – most notably Northborough who have lost their last 2 games to Parkside and Sawtry!
Dates for your diaries are ...
And finally, if anyone can help out with preparing, transporting and selling hot & cold drinks, bacon butties etc on match days please contact me ASAP – I’d like to see how it goes this weekend if we can get organised in time.
See you on Thursday at 1700 and Saturday at 1045.
Dave.
18th October 2007
IMPORTANT
I have postponed 2 games in the middle of November as Doug & I will be on a FA Coaching Course.
Please make a note of the following changes ...
Please confirm that you will be free on both of these dates as they are both important games.
Thanks,
Dave.
29th September 2007
So that’s our first month of this long season out of the way and with 3 victories out of 4, and a magnificent 10 goals for and just 2 against shows me that the team are really up for the challenge this season. It’s difficult to say which is more pleasing – the 10 goals we’ve scored or the 3 clean sheets. It’s also good to see us in 3rd position in the league already, just behind Bourne on goal difference and Northborough who have a 100% record and haven’t conceded a goal yet.
Last season we let too many goals in against “weaker” teams and gave ourselves an uphill struggle by gifting early goals to the better teams. So to have only conceded 2, both to Parkside who by no means had an easy ride of it, I am so pleased with the performances of the 5 lads who have played at the back for us – Jackson, David, Jason, George and James. It makes things so much easier for Doug & I as coaches to know that we have a solid platform on which to build our team.
And so to our forwards, Rhys, Jacob, Freddie and Toby, between them they have scored 6 goals, but more importantly they have created another 10+ good goal scoring opportunities, giving me confidence that whoever we play, we will always have a tight defence and a goal scoring threat. It was also pleasing to see us score 5 against Wittering as we’ve never really been able to kill teams off in the past, often having to settle for a 1 or 2 goal lead at most.
However, performance of the season so far goes to our display against Yaxley. We always know that we will get a tough battle when we play Yaxley, and last week’s game was no exception. With both teams hitting the woodwork (well metalwork) and with 2 fine defensive units up against each other it took something special to break the deadlock. For a long time it looked like we’d have to settle for 1 point (and I’d have taken it at half time), but another great quality of our team this season is our ability to keep plugging away and soak up the pressure from the opposing teams. We saw that against Grantham a few weeks ago and I think the tough friendly programme has paid dividends as we have a harder edge to us now. So when George hit that sweet right footed strike in the 39th minute there was only one place that ball was going. We saw how much that meant to the home team when there were a few tears, but Yaxley should hold their heads high as they will once again be a top 3 contender this season as they won’t lose many games.
I make no apologies for not changing the line-up much so far this season. Whilst fun should always be the main factor in Junior football – a winning mentality breeds confidence and energy which results in the lads having fun in league games, friendlies and training sessions. I’m also a great believer in playing the lads to their strengths – there’s no point in trying to fit a square peg into a round hole! We have 2 recognised keepers, 3 defensive players and 4 forwards so unless injuries or absence dictates otherwise, I will field what I believe to be the strongest 7 every week, with the substitutes still getting plenty of football and given plenty of chances to make a difference to the game and stake a claim for a starting role in the following weeks team. My starting team will always be based upon performances in the previous week’s game and attitude in training. I need everyone to give me 100% week in and week out and make my job as difficult as possible when naming the starting 7. Healthy competition for places is a great way of getting the most out of the lads, and with next season at the back of our minds I need to push them all to develop their skills and game play so that they all make the squad of 16 at the end of this season.
And that brings me neatly to the parents meeting that should have happened a few weeks ago.
I’m struggling to find a time when I can get parents of all the Clarets & Blues in the same place so I’ll issue a letter at training this week and then invite questions from you all.
Can I finish by asking everyone to help out on home match days please by putting up and/or putting away the goals? I usually arrive at the ground at 10:30 to start preparations for the game and I’d appreciate it if 2 Dad’s could also arrive then to sort the pitch out. We’ve only got 9 home league games and 9 sets of parents so if everyone does one match we’ll all have to do it just once.
So that’s all from me for now folks – a great start to the season but there’s loads of difficult games to come over the next 6 months so let’s not get too carried away. October sees us playing Glinton Amber (away), Wittering Harriers (cup – away) and than we have a break over the half term holiday, with our first game back after the break being a table topping clash at home against our local rivals Northborough Blues on 3rd November.
As always, please give me as much notice as possible if your son isn’t going to be available for a match – with such a small squad I may need to postpone a game if I can’t muster up a team, but I can only postpone a game with 14 days notice, otherwise we need to play the game with a player down or face a hefty fine.
Dave.
BTW – Training is at Deeping Rangers again this week (17:00 – 18:30) for the last time this year. From next Thursday (11th October) onwards we will train on the all weather pitch at the Rugby club from 17:00 – 18:00
6th September 2007
Well that’s our pre-season “tour” over and I personally am very happy with the way our preparations for the coming season have gone.
I deliberately chose tough opposition for all of our friendly games to ensure that the lads were stretched and pushed, and things couldn’t have gone better.
We started with a well earned draw against Whittlesey who were a tough team to break down when we played them 3 times last season as Nene Valley. We then travelled north to Grantham to play a good side in Gonerby who we beat 3-1, thanks to a hattrick from Jacob and some great football from the rest of the team (special thanks to Jimmy & Zac from the blues for helping us out). We then played what I believe to be the best team we have seen at our level in Grantham Town. They passed the ball with ease and had great communication and technical skills – something we could definitely learn from. They ran out 4-1 winners against us, but as this was our second game in succession I’m not too bothered about the score – it was the performance I was impressed with and even when our lads were shattered, they still found the strength to get a tackle in and move forward looking to get themselves back into the game. And then tonight we rounded off our week of friendlies with a great display against Rippingale who have always given us a good game. Again, it was great to watch all of the lads embrace the game and take it to the opposition – something we lacked at times last season – and it paid dividends with a superb 3-1 victory.
Whilst we have to keep our feet on the ground, the lads have the ability to do very well this season.
Here’s to another exciting season folks – hold onto your hats, it could be one to remember!
Dave.
23rd August 2007
Well that’s the first training session of the season out of the way, and I for one can’t wait until our first game of the season in just over 2 weeks time against Oundle Juniors as the lads were looking really sharp and “up for it”.
However, before then we’ve got 4 friendlies lined up to get us back in the swing of things ...
30th August – Whittlesey Juniors (renamed from Nene Valley last season) are coming over to Outgang Rd to play both Deeping teams and we’ll also play each other
2nd September – We’re venturing north up the A1 to Grantham where we’ll play two 40 minute games against Grantham and Gonerby
6th September – Our last pre-season friendly is just 2 days before we meet Oundle and it’s against our local rivals Rippingale Rovers who always give us a tough game
As far as I am concerned I have had responses from the following to tell me if they are available or not ...

Can those with a “U” beside their name please contact me asap?
I also need to rearrange the parents meeting that should have happened this evening. I don’t feel it is fair that I do this with some people missing as it is very important that everyone gets the same message at the same time. Therefore, I’ll speak to you all over the next couple of weeks and get a date in the diary that is suitable for everyone (U10 Blues as well).
And last thing before I sign off – Christmas Party. To date I have only had a response from Nigel Moore. I know it early in the year to start thinking about Christmas but if we don’t get booked up now we’ll be stuck with a limited choice like we had last year. To remind you we’re trying to book The Deeping Stage on Saturday 8th December for £25 per person which includes food and entertainment. Can I have names, numbers and deposits (£10 per head) back to me by 2nd September at the VERY latest please?
That’s all for now – more news coming your way soon so please keep checking these pages.
Dave.
PS – The first team are playing well again this season – if you’re stuck for something to do on a Saturday afternoon I can recommend bringing the kids down to Outgang Rd to watch the team try to win promotion.
4th August 2007
At last – summer is here!
It’s been a while since you heard from me so I thought I’d email you before you forget who I am.
Firstly, I’m glad to say that we’ve retained all nine players form last season and I’m really looking forward to building upon the success we had last year. Next season’s fixtures are now on the Deeping Rangers website – please look at our fixtures page for details.
Secondly, training will resume at 5pm on Thursday 16th August on the grass at Deeping Rangers.
This will be our training slot for the whole of next season and we’ll move onto the astro-turf at the rugby club once the nights start to draw in towards the end of September.
I will be holding a parents meeting on Thursday 23rd August from 6pm at Deeping Rangers. I’ll try to get the clubhouse opened but it may be a case of congregating on the footy pitch so please bring a chair or rug to sit on – and feel free to bring a couple of cold beers in a coolbox to sip on as I bore you senseless. This will be a joint meeting between the clarets & blues as we need to tell you about a few changes that will be happening over the next 12 months in preparation for us moving to Sunday 11-a-side football.
I’ve organised 2 friendly games against Grantham Town and Gonerby on Sunday 2nd Sept in Grantham. Both of these teams will provide tough opposition for us and will be a valuable end to our pre-season training. I hope all 9 lads will be able to make it as I need them all to get as much football in before the season kicks off on the following Saturday against Oundle. I’ll also organise a local friendly on Thursday 30th, Saturday 25th, and possibly even Saturday 18th if I can muster up a team – please let me know about all of these dates asap.
And finally, we’ve already put plans in place for our Christmas party! I know we haven’t even had summer yet but we left it far too late to organise anything last year and we were stuck with the Towngate Inn. So we’ve got a provisional booking at The Deeping Stage on Saturday 8th December. Tickets will be £25 per head which will include a 3 course meal plus entertainment. If you are interested, please give me a £10 deposit (per head) by Thursday 23rd August. This will be non-refundable but hopefully people’s diaries aren’t too full for December just yet?
That’s all for now – please let me know as soon as you can if you’ll be able to make
(a) training on 16th;
(b) meeting on 23rd;
(c) all friendly dates in mid/late August/early September;
& (d) xmas meal on 8th Dec.
See you all on the 16th August, if not before.
Dave.
PS – For those of you yet to take the Soccer Parent test, please take 20 minutes to visit the FA website and forward a copy of your certificate to me once you’ve completed it.
