The section, in its present format, was formed in 1987 and commenced the following season with six teams. An independent committee was formed to manage the administration and finances which consisted of officers, eg chairman, secretary etc and all team managers.

Today the section has developed and grown and includes a Child Protection Officer.  Competitive football is provided for all ages from Under 7’s to Under 18’s.

Much focus and emphasis has been placed on the welfare and safety of all junior players and ensuring that all team managers attain the Level 1 Football Managers qualification. As a result the section has recently being awarded the prestigious F.A. Charter Mark.

Although still a separate section it is now responsible to the clubs Executive.

Two tournaments are held each year – a six a side competition for Under 8’s, 9’s and 10’s traditionally held on the May Day Bank Holiday, and an 11 a side competition for Under 11’s – 16’s normally held over two Sundays during late August / early September.

One of the most popular events of the football year is the Chairmans Cup. This is an annual end of season match between the Under 11’s and Under 12’s followed by a ‘friendly’ adults match comprising many of the players fathers.

It is always pleasing to watch players develop and progress through the junior / youth system to the first team. Indeed, Malcolm Christie, a Premiership player with both Derby County and Middlesbrough is a product of the section.
